Like a Dragon: Ishin! is a samurai-themed action adventure and a remake of the 2014 spin-off often known as Yakuza Ishin. If the title feels a bit confusing, here’s the simple version: it takes the familiar Like a Dragon (Yakuza) vibe and drops it into 19th-century Japan, with a new setting and a historical lead. If you enjoy the Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth series vibes here, this delivers in spades.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! - what you do and who you are

You play as Sakamoto Ryoma, a historical figure, placed right in the middle of 1867 Japan. The story heads to Kyo, a fictional take on Kyoto, at a time when the samurai era is coming to an end. Your main drive is personal and straightforward: you follow the trail of the person who murdered your mentor. The only real clue is a rare but brutally effective fighting style used by the killer.

That school is closed. Classic. So you do what any determined swordsman would do: you go where the remaining students ended up - Kyo - and start connecting dots the hard way, one lead at a time.

Exploration in a compact open world

Kyo is a small open world, but it’s densely packed. You roam streets, pick up missions, and constantly bump into distractions that turn into full side stories. If you like doing “just one more thing” before returning to the main plot, this game clearly gets you.

The campaign is substantial, and the game doesn’t treat side content as filler. Optional adventures come with their own little narratives, often not directly tied to the central mystery. Sometimes you will chase the killer. Sometimes you will end up doing something completely different because someone asked nicely. It happens.

Combat system - four styles, different jobs

The core is an expanded, skill-based combat system built around four fighting styles, each with its own techniques and purpose. You switch styles depending on the situation, the enemies in front of you, and honestly your mood. Fights are third-person and action-focused, with a mix of swordplay, fists, and even firearms in the toolkit.

There are also RPG elements. As you play, you develop Ryoma, improving his physical capability and unlocking new attacks. The loop is simple: fight, learn, hit harder, try a new approach, and keep moving. If a tough encounter pushes back, it’s usually a hint to sharpen your skills or rethink your style choice, not a sign you should give up. The action here echoes the intensity of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

What combat feels like moment to moment

  • You read an enemy group and pick a style that fits.
  • You juggle offense and timing in close-range clashes.
  • You lean on different tools - blade, fists, and guns - when it makes sense.

It’s not about pretending every fight is a duel. Sometimes it’s messy. That’s part of the charm.

Minigames and side activities - the real time sink

Between battles, the game hits you with a ridiculous amount of optional activities. The list is long, and yes, you can lose an evening to it. You can take part in minigames like:

  • singing
  • dancing
  • gambling
  • fishing
  • cooking
  • chicken racing

Each activity is framed with its own story beats, and they often feel like small detours that reset your brain after a tense chapter. One minute you’re hunting a murderer. Next minute you’re trying to nail a rhythm challenge. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Remake details and technical notes on PC

As a remake, Like a Dragon: Ishin! upgrades the visuals compared to the original release. This version is built on Unreal Engine 4, making it the first entry in the brand that doesn’t rely on the studio’s in-house tech. There’s also a notable presentation change: several character faces were adjusted to resemble characters from later Yakuza releases, reinforcing the “alternate versions” vibe you’ll notice during the story.

Modes and who it’s for

This is a single-player game only. If you want co-op or competitive modes, they are simply not here. What you get instead is a focused campaign, a busy open-world hub, and a combat system designed for you to tinker with.

If you enjoy third-person action, historical Japan, and a mix of serious drama with weirdly cozy side distractions, Like a Dragon: Ishin! is easy to recommend checking out. And if you’re the kind of player who says “I’ll do the main quest after one minigame,” well, you’ve been warned.
