Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a third-person action-adventure spin-off in the Like a Dragon series (formerly known in the West as Yakuza). This time you step into the boots of Goro Majima - and he wakes up on a beach with a problem that changes everything: he has amnesia. No name, no past, just sand in his hair and a weird sense that trouble will find him anyway.
You don’t stay alone for long. Noah, the person who saved your life, becomes your first companion. Soon you’re building a pirate crew and sailing out to figure out who you are and what happened before that beach. It’s modern-day, but the pirates you meet look like they walked out of a classic, old-school pirate story. That contrast is part of the vibe: Hawaii and nearby islands, but with "traditional" pirate flair and a lot of people looking for a fight.
What you do in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
The core loop is straightforward in a good way. You take story missions that push the plot forward, and you mix them with side quests and plenty of optional activities - a familiar hallmark of the series. You bounce between land exploration on foot and sea travel on your ship. Want to focus on the main conflict? You can. Want to get distracted for an hour because something odd caught your eye? Also very on-brand.
The adventure takes you through different locations. Besides the titular Hawaii, you visit places like Rich Island (home to fishermen), Madlantis (Madlantydę / Madlantis), and the sacred island of Nele. Each stop is part of the route as you drift into a growing conflict between local pirates and other bandits. And yes, there’s a legendary treasure involved. Because of course there is.
Combat: two styles, one very dangerous Majima
When things get physical - and they will - you fight up close using two distinct combat styles. Switching your approach is not just a cosmetic choice; it changes how you handle crowds and tough enemies.
- Mad Dog style: you lean into speed and agility, stun opponents, and burst out heavy damage when you see an opening.
- Pirate style: you wield two short swords and add tricks to your toolkit, giving fights a flashier, more swashbuckling rhythm.
Sometimes you’re clearing a path. Sometimes you’re dealing with a captain-type enemy who refuses to go down quietly. Either way, you’re in third-person view the whole time, close enough to feel every hit and dodge. It’s the kind of combat where you catch yourself thinking, "Okay, that was messy - but it worked."
Ship travel and real-time naval battles
On the ocean, the game shifts into real-time ship combat. You sail, you position, you fire, and you try not to get turned into floating scrap. The key is simple: get a good angle for accurate shooting while avoiding incoming projectiles. Easy to say, harder when the sea is loud and everyone’s aiming at you.
Once you’ve softened up an enemy ship, you can board it. That’s when naval combat turns into a direct showdown: you fight the captain and the remaining crew, and if you win, you take the ship. It’s a nice pirate logic loop. You see a better ship, you beat it, you keep it.
Progression at sea
As you advance, you gain access to new vessels and you can also upgrade the ships you already own. That means your time on the water isn’t just travel time. It’s part of your power curve. Better ship options and upgrades feed back into tougher battles and bigger risks you can afford to take.
Why the setup works
An amnesiac yakuza veteran turning pirate in Hawaii is a strange pitch. It’s also a very clear one. You’re chasing answers about your identity, but you’re doing it the hard way: missions, brawls, crews, and a treasure-driven conflict that keeps escalating. You explore islands on foot, sail between them, and fight both on deck and on land. And when you finally think you’re just passing through, someone inevitably challenges you. That’s the job.
If you like the idea of a third-person action-adventure with lots to do, two distinct combat styles, and real-time ship battles that end in boarding fights, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii gives you that full pirate detour - with Majima at the center of it.
