AETHUS is an isometric sci-fi survival game where you play as Maeve, a former mining engineer trying to build a life beyond the reach of a galactic corporation. You land on an alien planet that feels more like a dry, hostile worksite than a heroic frontier. That is the point. You start small, work with basic mining gear, and slowly turn a barren claim into something livable.
What you do in AETHUS
Your main loop is clear from the start - gather resources, expand your outpost, improve your tools, and push farther into the planet. Some materials come from natural deposits, often hidden underground. Others wait inside abandoned facilities left behind by a failed science expedition. So yes, exploration matters, but it is tied closely to survival and progression. Like in Stranded Alien Dawn, you manage survival on an alien world.
You mine, refine, process, and craft. Then you do it again with better equipment. It is the kind of structure that can feel steady and satisfying when the upgrades start clicking into place.
Base building and production
Your command center uses a modular building system, which is one of the defining parts of AETHUS. You create a mining hub made of specialized structures and stations. That includes places for refining, processing, and crafting, but also greener, more personal spaces like greenhouses and aquariums. Nice touch, honestly. It makes the base feel like more than a pile of machines.
You can also decorate habitats with items you find, which adds a lighter layer to a game built around extraction and survival. If you like seeing your base become more useful and more lived-in over time, this part should stand out.
Mining, upgrades, and automation
At first, Maeve has only basic mining equipment. Later, you unlock tools such as lasers, explosives, and drills. These let you reach more resource types and go deeper into your claim. Progress also extends to your suit and your AI drone companion, opening the way to broader exploration and more efficient work.
Automation enters the picture as you advance, letting you streamline more parts of your operation. That means AETHUS is not just about scraping by. It is also about building momentum and improving the way your whole setup runs. For fans of zombie survival with base building, check out HumanitZ.
AETHUS and difficulty options
AETHUS lets you adjust the experience with game modifiers, and that can make a big difference. You can tune things like oxygen drain, how long Maeve survives without food or water, and how much weight she can carry. Want a calmer exploration-focused run? You can lean that way. Prefer a harsher survival setup? That is on the table too.
This flexibility matters because survival games can sometimes lose people on pacing or pressure. Here, you get room to shape the challenge around what you actually enjoy.
Story and atmosphere
There is a narrative thread running through everything. Maeve is not just mining for the sake of numbers going up. She is trying to escape ARC, the Astral Resource Corporation, while investigating a powerful new element and the secrets buried on this planet. Her only steady companion is an AI-controlled drone, and the remains of the failed expedition give the setting a quiet, uneasy mood.
The story seems designed to keep pushing you forward rather than sitting in the background. If you want survival systems with a reason behind them, that is a good sign.
Should you play AETHUS?
AETHUS looks like a good fit if you enjoy survival games with mining, modular base building, gradual automation, and a strong sci-fi premise. You spend your time gathering, crafting, upgrading, and uncovering what happened on this hostile world. If that loop sounds good to you, AETHUS has a clear identity and a nice mix of pressure, customization, and story.
