HumanitZ drops you into a world where civilization didn’t just stumble - it got eaten. The zombie outbreak turned regular people into an endangered species, and the infected (the “zeeks”) now roam like they own the place. Your job is simple to say and hard to do: stay alive, one day at a time.
What you do in HumanitZ
You play from an isometric viewpoint in an open-world sandbox. That means you choose your pace and your priorities. Do you push into dense cities for better loot, knowing a horde might be waiting behind the next door? Or do you back off into the countryside and try to survive off the land with hunting, fishing, and farming? Either way, you’re managing risk constantly. And yes, sometimes you’ll make a “quick” supply run that turns into a messy retreat.
Create your survivor, then live with the choices
You start by making your own character. You shape appearance, and you also pick a pre-apocalypse profession that affects available perks. There are also afflictions and a skill-tree system mentioned in the game’s description, so your survivor can develop in a direction that fits how you play. Want to lean into scavenging and tools? Prefer combat readiness? You build that identity over time.
Exploration, vehicles, and getting your loot home
The world stretches from wilderness to urban zones, and moving through it isn’t a casual stroll. You can travel on foot, but drivable vehicles matter a lot when you need to cross dangerous ground or haul materials. Vehicles also come with responsibilities: you have to watch their technical condition and keep an eye on fuel. You can’t just treat a car like a magic inventory box forever.
Vehicles help you push farther, carry supplies, and bring companions along. They can also become part of your planning: do you risk driving into a hot area for a big haul, or keep it quiet and slow? It’s that kind of game.
Scavenge, craft, and avoid starving
Survival isn’t only about fighting. Hunger and exposure are real threats, and the game highlights a dynamic weather system that can make a bad decision feel even worse. To keep going, you scavenge resources, gather weapons, and craft what you need.
- Scavenge buildings using tools like lockpicks and a crowbar.
- Craft tools and food so you don’t die from hunger.
- Choose self-sufficiency with farming, hunting, and fishing.
On the weapon side, you’ll find options ranging from simple melee like baseball bats to firearms like pistols and rifles. The game also talks about customizing weapons with attachments and modifications, which adds another layer to how you prepare for a run.
Build a base that actually holds up
Eventually you need a place to breathe. In HumanitZ you can find shelter, then renovate and fortify it. Your base is meant to protect you from weather shifts, raids by bandits, and the ever-present zeeks. Defensive structures are part of the toolset, including examples like electrified fences and concrete barricades. It’s not just decoration - it’s about buying yourself time when things go loud.
And because crafting and building also extend to vehicles (including upgrades like armor, weapons, and storage capacity), you’re often deciding what to improve next: the house, the car, or your kit. You can’t do everything at once, so you prioritize.
Zeeks are not all the same
HumanitZ makes a point of giving you different infected variants. Some are only scary in groups. Others are described as faster, smarter, and equipped with special tricks - like toxic vapors. The takeaway is clear: you adapt your tactics to what’s in front of you. Sometimes that means fighting. Sometimes that means backing off and living to loot another day.
Solo, co-op, and online play in HumanitZ
You can play singleplayer, or team up in online co-op for up to four players. The description also mentions online PvE and PvP modes, dedicated servers, and proximity voice chat. Co-op changes the feel immediately: you can split roles, watch angles, and haul more gear. But it also means mistakes are shared. Ever had a friend open the wrong door? Yeah.
If you want extra pressure, there’s an optional permadeath mode. Flip it on, and suddenly every detour and every “we’ll be fine” moment gets heavier.
Should you try HumanitZ?
If you like survival games where you set your own goals, plan routes, maintain vehicles, and slowly turn a fragile shelter into something defensible, HumanitZ is built around that loop. You explore, you scavenge, you craft, you fortify, you adapt. Then you ask yourself the same question again: do you risk one more trip before dark?
