Game Description

Marvel's Midnight Suns PC is a single-player tactical RPG that combines turn-based card combat, party customization, social relationship systems, and third-person exploration. The PC storefront still lists the game under its original name; Marvel's Midnight Suns Legendary Edition is an expanded bundle, not a renamed replacement for the base game.

Card-Based Tactical Combat With Superhero Momentum

Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, Marvel's Midnight Suns uses a mission structure built around three-hero squads. Each playable hero has a personal deck, and the abilities dealt during a turn determine which attacks, defenses, movement options, and support effects are available.

The system is not a traditional collectible card game. You do not construct a deck from an unlimited card pool before every battle. Instead, you improve individual heroes by acquiring duplicate abilities, upgrading cards, applying modifiers, and deciding which versions deserve a place in each character's limited loadout.

Combat rewards planning but avoids the rigid action-point economy associated with many tactical games. Card plays, redraws, movement, and Heroism interact throughout each turn, while environmental objects can be used for attacks, knockbacks, and area damage.

Positioning is therefore more than a defensive concern. Throwing an enemy into another target, slamming it against a hazard, or arranging a chain of attacks can turn a weak hand into a decisive sequence. Players coming from cover-based squad games should note that this is not simply a Marvel reskin of XCOM.

Its closest Firaxis comparison is the campaign-focused squad tactics of XCOM 2, but Midnight Suns removes hit percentages, conventional cover management, and permanent soldier death from its central combat loop.

The Abbey, Friendship, and Hero Development

Between missions, The Abbey acts as the team's base of operations and the game's main role-playing hub. You explore its rooms and surrounding grounds, investigate hidden areas, gather resources, use facilities, and speak with heroes outside combat.

The social layer is not decorative. Friendship levels unlock passive bonuses, new cards, combination abilities, outfits, and character-specific rewards. Conversations, gifts, hangouts, shared activities, and dialogue choices all influence how the Hunter relates to the roster.

The Hunter is a customizable original hero with appearance options, dialogue decisions, and a morality system divided between Light and Dark alignment. These choices affect the way the character develops, but they do not turn the game into a branching campaign with completely separate story paths.

Abbey activities also feed the tactical layer. Training improves heroes, research unlocks new facilities and upgrades, and resources gathered through exploration support the broader progression system. Ignoring the Abbey is possible at lower difficulties, but players who invest in it gain more tools for building effective squads.

This structure gives Marvel's Midnight Suns a distinctive rhythm: prepare at the Abbey, select a mission, solve a tactical encounter with a limited hand of cards, then return to develop heroes and relationships.

Roster, Synergy, and Mission Structure

The roster spans the Avengers, X-Men, Runaways, and supernatural members of the Midnight Suns. Core characters include Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Blade, Magik, Nico Minoru, Ghost Rider, Scarlet Witch, and Hulk, alongside the Hunter.

Each hero has a clear tactical identity, but the best results come from combining roles rather than selecting characters by raw damage. Knockback effects can feed environmental attacks, marked targets can improve card efficiency, and support abilities can create the Heroism needed for expensive finishing moves.

Story missions often impose a required hero, encouraging players to develop a broad roster instead of relying on one permanent team. Optional missions provide additional opportunities to earn resources, upgrade cards, and test less familiar combinations.

The campaign is a directed narrative experience rather than a procedural roguelike. Its long-term mastery loop comes from optimizing squads, completing optional objectives, improving friendship levels, experimenting with card upgrades, and replaying missions at higher difficulty settings.

Base Game, Legendary Edition, and DLC

The base game contains the main campaign, the Abbey progression system, the original hero roster, and the complete card-based combat framework. It is a paid single-player game rather than a free-to-play title, and its core progression does not depend on a recurring battle pass.

The optional Season Pass adds four playable heroes: Deadpool, Venom, Morbius, and Storm. Each DLC pack also adds story missions, an Abbey upgrade, and additional cosmetic content.

The four hero packs are The Good, the Bad, and the Undead, Redemption, The Hunger, and Blood Storm. The Season Pass also includes the Legendary Premium Pack with 23 premium skins, although cosmetic content does not replace the gameplay additions provided by the hero packs.

The Legendary Edition bundles the base game with the Season Pass. When comparing storefront listings, check whether a package includes the pass or only the standalone game, because the edition names describe different content bundles rather than separate versions of the campaign.

Who Marvel's Midnight Suns Suits

This is a strong fit for PC players who enjoy turn-based tactics but want a more forgiving and character-driven alternative to permanent-death strategy campaigns. The game is particularly well suited to players who like planning combos, upgrading party members, and spending time with a large ensemble cast between missions.

Marvel fans benefit from the roster, but prior knowledge of the comics is not required. The story establishes its own conflict around Lilith, the Hunter, Hydra, and the elder god Chthon, while the relationships give familiar characters more room to interact than a conventional action game usually allows.

Players seeking uninterrupted combat should approach carefully. Abbey exploration, conversations, research, gifts, and friendship activities occupy a substantial part of the experience. The game is not designed as a mission-only tactical sandbox.

It is also a poor match for players looking for online co-op, competitive multiplayer, or a traditional open-world superhero adventure. The core experience is structured, turn-based, and single-player from beginning to end.

PC Features, Controls, and Localization

The Steam edition identifies full controller support, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers, alongside mouse-and-keyboard play. Steam also lists Steam Deck compatibility as Playable, making the game viable for players who want to manage cards and missions away from a desktop setup.

PC storefront support includes achievements, Family Sharing, and in-app purchases. Steam lists Denuvo Anti-tamper as third-party DRM, so the DRM situation should be considered when comparing PC storefront versions.

Interface and subtitle localization covers English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Full audio is available in a smaller selection of languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.

The game is single-player only. There is no advertised online co-op, split-screen campaign, or multiplayer squad mode, so buying additional editions expands the solo content rather than adding a cooperative feature set.

Comparable PC Games

Players who want a more traditional strategic campaign with research, global management, cover, and persistent squad consequences should look toward turn-based resistance strategy in XCOM 2. The two games share Firaxis DNA, but their priorities are different: XCOM 2 emphasizes campaign pressure, while Midnight Suns emphasizes hero combinations and personal relationships.

For the card-focused side, procedural deckbuilding runs like Slay the Spire offer a useful contrast. Slay the Spire is built around repeated roguelike climbs and evolving card-relic synergies, whereas Midnight Suns uses cards inside a persistent narrative RPG with a fixed hero roster and a developed home base.

These comparisons explain why the game attracts players from several genres without fitting neatly into only one of them. Its tactical battles, social progression, and card upgrades are designed to reinforce one another.

Marvel's Midnight Suns FAQ

Is Marvel's Midnight Suns still the current PC name?

Yes. Steam and Epic list the game as Marvel's Midnight Suns. The Legendary Edition is a bundle containing the base game and Season Pass, not a rebrand or replacement title.

Is Marvel's Midnight Suns single-player?

Yes. The campaign, Abbey activities, hero development, and DLC missions are designed for one player. The PC versions do not advertise online co-op or split-screen multiplayer.

How many heroes can be taken into combat?

Most missions use a squad of up to three heroes. Some missions require a particular character, so developing more than one preferred team is important for campaign progression.

Does the base game include Deadpool, Venom, Morbius, and Storm?

No. Those four playable heroes belong to the Season Pass and its individual DLC packs. The Legendary Edition includes that pass, while the standalone base game does not.

Is the combat a normal deckbuilding game?

Not exactly. Every hero has a personal ability deck, but players improve those decks through campaign progression, card acquisition, upgrades, and modifiers rather than constructing a completely unrestricted deck before each mission.

Does the PC version support controllers?

Yes. Steam lists full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers, in addition to mouse-and-keyboard input. Steam also marks the game as Playable on Steam Deck.

Does Marvel's Midnight Suns have a traditional replay structure?

The main campaign is a directed story rather than an endless procedural run. Replay value comes from higher difficulty settings, New Game Plus, alternate hero builds, card upgrades, friendship progression, optional missions, and DLC story content.
