Game Description
Astroneer on PC is a third-person space exploration sandbox from System Era Softworks, built around terrain deformation, resource gathering, modular base building, automation, and cooperative planetary expeditions. The current Steam listing still uses the name ASTRONEER; there is no verified storefront rebrand replacing the original title. Its central appeal is tactile rather than combat-focused: dig into alien worlds, build the tools that extend your reach, and gradually turn a fragile outpost into an interplanetary operation.
Shape planets, then build beyond the landing site
The defining tool is the Terrain Tool, which can remove, add, flatten, collect, and color terrain. It is not simply a mining device. Players use it to open tunnels, create ramps, level construction sites, reach underground resources, and reshape routes around bases and vehicles.
Early progress revolves around oxygen, power, and material logistics. Tethers extend oxygen and power networks away from a shelter, while the backpack provides a compact starting inventory and printer. Every expedition asks the same practical question: how far can you travel before your support chain stops being reliable?
Resources feed into printers, platforms, generators, vehicles, research equipment, and increasingly sophisticated production lines. The result is a loop of exploration, extraction, research, and construction rather than a conventional mission-based action game.
Players who enjoy the calm but demanding resource loop of planetary survival sandboxes like The Planet Crafter will recognize the appeal, although Astroneer places more emphasis on freely sculpting the world and engineering transport networks.
Research, automation, and interplanetary progression
New technology is unlocked through Bytes, Astroneer's research currency. Research Samples can be consumed directly or processed through a Research Chamber, while larger Research Items and other discoveries provide more substantial returns when properly investigated.
The Research Catalog turns exploration into a technology-planning exercise. You decide whether to prioritize better oxygen support, power generation, vehicles, storage, drilling capability, shuttle equipment, automation, or late-game infrastructure.
Automation becomes increasingly important as a save develops. Resource harvesters, crafting stations, power systems, storage solutions, rail facilities, and other modules can be combined into production chains that reduce repetitive manual work.
Travel also evolves from walking and tether networks to vehicles, shuttles, planetary gateways, and rail systems. The seven main celestial bodies can be explored from their surfaces down into their cores, with different geography, resources, cave layers, and environmental conditions shaping each expedition.
The game does not rely on a traditional combat progression ladder. Its mastery loop is about understanding resource locations, improving infrastructure, solving planetary objectives, and making increasingly ambitious bases and transport systems function together.
Adventure, Creative Mode, and Custom Games
Adventure Mode provides the standard survival-sandbox structure, including oxygen and power management, research, crafting, planetary travel, missions, and discoveries. It gives new players direction without forcing every session into a rigid campaign route.
Creative Mode removes much of the resource pressure and is suited to construction, experimentation, and large-scale base design. It is also useful for learning how modules, vehicles, platforms, and terrain tools interact before committing to a more demanding save.
For players who want precise control, Custom Games expose a wide range of settings. You can choose a starting planet, remove the starting shelter, adjust oxygen behavior, change respawn rules, disable selected systems, modify planet generation, set seeds, and tune biome, resource, puzzle, and point-of-interest frequency.
Custom configurations can be shared through numerical share codes. That makes the mode relevant to challenge runs, speedrun setups, themed co-op saves, accessibility-focused sessions, and hardcore permadeath rules rather than merely serving as a creative toggle.
What the base game and expansions contain
The paid base game contains the core planetary sandbox, research catalog, base construction, vehicles, automation, missions, Creative Mode, Custom Games, and solo or cooperative play. The main experience is not free-to-play and is not structured around a rotating battle pass.
Optional paid expansions currently include Astroneer: Glitchwalkers and Astroneer: Megatech. Glitchwalkers adds the Aeoluz system, a dedicated storyline, new biomes, hacked storms, firewalls, expansion-specific progression, and additional challenges built around storm data and protection systems.
A useful ownership detail is that a player who owns Glitchwalkers can host a regular multiplayer save that invited players can enter even if they do not own the expansion. Non-owners can participate in the expansion content during that session, but expansion-exclusive rewards are reserved for owners.
Megatech focuses on large-scale construction through DLC-exclusive megastructures, including the Orbital Platform, Museum, and other major building projects. Its free accompanying update also adds base-game features such as new plantable species and improvements to resource, rail, and building systems.
The storefront also lists optional cosmetic packs, a soundtrack, and bundles. These extras are not required to access the core exploration, crafting, automation, or cooperative progression systems.
Who should play Astroneer?
Astroneer is a strong fit for players who enjoy creative building, space exploration, logistics, and cooperative projects more than reflex-heavy combat. It rewards people who like turning a rough landing site into a carefully planned network of platforms, machines, storage, power, and transport.
It is especially well suited to small groups. One player can scout for resources, another can organize research, and others can expand the base or prepare vehicles for the next planet.
Players looking for a strongly authored survival story, constant enemy pressure, or a traditional shooter loop may find Astroneer deliberately quiet. Threat comes primarily from oxygen limits, hazardous environments, navigation mistakes, resource bottlenecks, and the consequences of building an inefficient operation.
Its colorful presentation and forgiving creative options make it approachable, but the deeper systems can become intricate. The game is at its best when you enjoy setting your own goals and solving practical problems without needing a quest marker for every activity.
PC features, multiplayer, and localization
The PC version supports keyboard and mouse controls as well as controller play. Steam features include online co-op, Steam Cloud, achievements, Family Sharing, and Remote Play on supported devices.
Standard online co-op supports 2 to 4 players. Players can join a host's world and work together on the same planetary infrastructure, while solo worlds can also allow friends to drop in and out through the supported multiplayer structure.
For longer-running groups, dedicated servers are available through the separate ASTRONEER Dedicated Server tool. Dedicated servers are also the important route for cross-platform play involving Steam, Xbox, Windows, and PlayStation players, subject to the platform and server rules.
System Era Softworks states that the game is built with Unreal Engine 4. Official mod support is not provided, so players should treat community modifications as unsupported and potentially unsafe for existing saves.
The PC storefront lists interface support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Turkish. Full audio is not listed for these languages, so the localization emphasis is on menus and text rather than dubbed dialogue.
Players who want a broader, more combat-oriented space sandbox may prefer the galaxy-spanning structure of space exploration games such as No Man's Sky. Astroneer is the more focused choice when terrain shaping, base logistics, and shared construction are the priority.
Astroneer FAQ
Is Astroneer still called ASTRONEER on PC?
Yes. The current Steam storefront listing uses ASTRONEER, and no verified rebrand or replacement title has been identified on the developer's official channels. Astroneer remains the recognized PC name.
Is Astroneer a survival game or a building game?
It combines both. Oxygen, power, resource collection, and hazardous planetary environments create the survival layer, while modular bases, automation, vehicles, rail systems, and terrain sculpting form the building and logistics layer.
Does Astroneer support co-op on PC?
Yes. The PC version supports online co-op for up to four players in a standard session. Dedicated servers provide a more persistent option and can enable supported cross-platform connections.
What does Glitchwalkers add?
Glitchwalkers adds the Aeoluz system, new biomes, a separate storyline and progression path, hacked storms, firewalls, new resources, modules, missions, and expansion-specific rewards. Several related storm features and base-game missions are available to all players through the accompanying update.
What makes Megatech different from a normal update?
Megatech is an optional expansion centered on megastructures, including large construction projects such as the Orbital Platform and Museum. The wider Megatech update also adds free improvements and new content to the base game.
Does Astroneer have a campaign with a fixed ending?
It has missions, mysteries, planetary objectives, and narrative discoveries, but its long-term structure is an open-ended mastery loop rather than a strictly linear campaign. Many players continue after completing major objectives to expand automation, improve transport, build elaborate bases, or experiment with Custom Games.
