Granblue Fantasy Versus

Granblue Fantasy Versus is a classic brawler set in a fantasy universe created for the hugely popular mobile RPG Granblue Fantasy. The title's developer is genre giant Arc System Works, the studio responsible for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series, as well as Dragon Ball FighterZ, released in 2018. The original Granblue Fantasy debuted in 2014. Japan-based Cygames was responsible for its production. Since then, the game has attracted several million players, mainly in Japan and East Asia, making it a recognizable brand with numerous adaptations in the form of anime series, books, comics, etc., as well as an action RPG that was created by the PlatinumGames studio.

Storyline

Just like in the mobile original, the action of Granblue Fantasy Versus takes place in a fantasy world. It consists of hundreds of islands floating in a sea of clouds, between which people travel in airships. The game's main character lives on a peaceful and small island called Zinkenstill. Together with his friend, a small dragon named Vyrn, he goes in search of his long lost father, from whom he unexpectedly receives a letter. Soon he meets Lyria, a girl with mysterious powers that allow her to summon legendary astral beasts. The production offers a completely new story, pitting numerous heroes against each other, who were introduced in the mobile RPG. It is worth noting, however, that it is not necessary to know it in order to play.

Mechanics

Granblue Fantasy Versus is a classic 1v1 brawler in which players control one of many available characters, characterized by different fighting styles, special skills and combos. The action takes place on a two-dimensional set, but all models of the characters and the environment were made in 3D. As in other Arc System Works games, the creators introduced to the mechanics of the game optional facilitations for those who are new to fighting by simplifying the button combinations with which we perform special and complex moves.

Game modes

The game offers several modes. A big attraction is the story module, enriched with animated interludes and dialogue sections between characters. Apart from that, we can count on a standard arcade mode for the genre and numerous multiplayer options, both online and locally on a shared screen.

Technical issues

Like the latest Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ installments, the game uses the Unreal Engine 4. The developers, using advanced animation techniques and cel-shading, create the impression that we are dealing with a classic two-dimensional brawler. The game is accompanied by an energetic rock soundtrack, including some of the songs available in the Granblue Fantasy mobile game.
