Game Description
Neon Abyss PC is a side-scrolling roguelite action-platformer from Veewo Games, published by Team17. The original game remains listed under the name Neon Abyss on current PC storefronts; it has not been rebranded as Neon Abyss 2, which is a separate sequel. Its core appeal is fast run-and-gun combat, procedural rooms, stacking passive items, and a pet system built around hatching eggs.
You play as a member of Hades' Grim Squad, descending through the Abyss to confront the New Gods and Titan Corp. The story provides a loose framework for repeat runs rather than a conventional campaign, so the long-term objective is learning enemy patterns, unlocking content, and building stronger combinations across successive attempts.
Run-and-gun platforming in the Abyss
Each run uses a 2D side-scrolling perspective with platforming, shooting, jumping, room clearing, and resource management. The Abyss is assembled from procedurally generated rooms, with enemy encounters, treasure, shops, secrets, hazards, and special rooms changing the route from one attempt to the next.
Combat is based on movement and positioning rather than passive character stats alone. Weapons cover a wide range of firing patterns and behaviors, while bombs, keys, crystals, health, and other resources influence which rooms and rewards you can safely pursue. The game does not have a dedicated dodge-roll system like some top-down bullet-hell roguelites, so jumping, platform control, weapon range, and careful movement are especially important.
Boss encounters conclude the major stages and place more emphasis on reading attack patterns, controlling space, and preserving health. The New Gods are themed around modern obsessions, giving the boss roster a satirical identity that separates Neon Abyss from more traditional fantasy dungeon crawlers.
Stacking items, eggs, and evolving companions
The defining progression system is its stacking item synergy. Passive items can combine in unexpected ways, altering weapon behavior, movement, projectiles, defenses, and the value of other pickups. Strong runs are often built around recognizing which effects complement your current weapon rather than simply choosing the item with the largest individual bonus.
Eggs add a second layer of risk and reward. Collected eggs follow your character through the dungeon and may hatch after rooms are cleared, producing pets with their own combat or utility effects. Pets can attack enemies, modify your build, or evolve as the run continues, making egg hatching a central part of the game's identity rather than a cosmetic side feature.
Neon Abyss also includes an evolving dungeon system. Permanent progression at the hub can unlock additional rooms, items, bosses, special rules, characters, and endings, gradually expanding the pool of possibilities available in later runs. This structure gives early deaths a practical purpose: failed attempts contribute to a wider and more varied game rather than simply resetting progress.
Content, characters, and paid add-ons
The base game is a paid single-player experience with multiple playable characters, unlockable content, procedural dungeon runs, boss encounters, secrets, and short in-run diversions. Random mini-games, including piano performances, meditation challenges, and dance competitions, interrupt the shooting with optional activities that can provide additional rewards.
PC storefronts list three paid gameplay add-ons alongside the soundtrack. The Lovable Rogues Pack adds the playable characters Saya and Amir, while Alter Ego adds character skins with accompanying skills. Chrono Trap introduces the Titan Chronos and an Endless Mode designed for players who want to continue beyond the standard run structure.
The soundtrack is sold separately and is also included in some deluxe bundles. The commercial model is therefore straightforward: buy the base game for the main roguelite experience, then decide whether extra characters, alternate abilities, or Endless Mode justify the additional content packs.
Who should play Neon Abyss?
Neon Abyss suits players who enjoy solo action roguelites, fast platform shooting, colorful pixel art, and runs built around unusual combinations. It is approachable enough for players who are new to the genre, but its item interactions and increasingly demanding rooms give experienced players reasons to keep experimenting.
Players looking for a tightly authored platforming campaign, deep narrative choices, or a highly competitive precision shooter may find the repeated procedural structure less satisfying. The game is also better suited to people who enjoy adapting to random equipment than those who want every run to offer perfectly predictable tools.
Its closest appeal is the combination of horizontal platforming and roguelite gunplay. For a darker cyberpunk take on procedural 2D shooting, Black Future '88's frantic platform-shooter roguelike structure is a natural comparison, although Neon Abyss is more focused on item stacks, pets, and exploration.
PC features, controls, and storefront differences
The PC version supports keyboard and mouse play as well as controller input, with configurable controls. Its twin-stick-style aiming is most natural with a gamepad, while keyboard and mouse can provide more direct directional control for players who prefer traditional PC input.
Steam lists Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards, Family Sharing, and Remote Play features for phones and tablets. Epic Games Store lists controller support and cloud saves. GOG lists achievements, cloud saves, controller support, and a DRM-free version that can be installed and played without requiring GOG Galaxy or a permanent online connection.
Storefront language listings identify English audio and text alongside text localization for German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese. No dedicated competitive multiplayer or co-op mode is advertised for the original game, and the storefronts do not list a separate anti-cheat system. It is fundamentally a single-player experience.
For a top-down alternative centered on bullet patterns, weapon variety, and room-based roguelite progression, Enter the Gungeon's bullet-hell dungeon-crawling formula offers a useful point of comparison. Neon Abyss differs through its platforming focus, horizontal camera, pet eggs, and more pronounced hub-based dungeon evolution.
Similar PC games and genre fit
Neon Abyss occupies a space between a platform shooter and an action roguelite. Its closest comparisons are games that combine repeated runs with randomized equipment, aggressive enemy patterns, and permanent unlocks, but the side-scrolling camera gives its combat a different rhythm from top-down dungeon shooters.
Players who prefer heavier bullet-hell pressure and modular weapon construction may also want to compare it with Mothergunship's bullet-hell FPS roguelike combat. That game is first-person and emphasizes weapon construction, while Neon Abyss keeps the action in a readable 2D plane and makes item synergies, eggs, and platform movement its main sources of variety.
The result is a good fit for players who want short, repeatable solo runs with plenty of unlockable content and build experimentation. It is less suitable if local co-op, online matchmaking, or a fixed mission sequence is your main reason for playing a roguelite.

It is commonly described as a roguelite or roguelike action-platformer. Runs use procedural rooms and randomized rewards, while hub progression unlocks additional content and expands future possibilities.
Does Neon Abyss have co-op or online multiplayer?
The original game is listed as single-player and does not advertise native online co-op, local split-screen, or matchmaking. Steam's Remote Play features do not turn it into a dedicated multiplayer game.
What does the Chrono Trap add?
Chrono Trap adds the Titan Chronos and an Endless Mode. It is the main add-on for players who want a longer challenge beyond the standard run progression.
Does Neon Abyss support controllers on PC?
Yes. Controller support is listed on the major PC storefronts, and the game provides configurable controls. Keyboard and mouse input is also supported.
Is Neon Abyss DRM-free?
The GOG version is listed as DRM-free and does not require GOG Galaxy or an online connection to play. Steam and Epic use their respective storefront clients and account systems.
Does the game have a traditional campaign?
Not in the usual linear sense. Its main structure is a sequence of repeatable procedural runs with stage bosses, unlocks, characters, secrets, evolving dungeon rules, and alternate endings providing the long-term objectives.
