Thymesia

Thymesia takes the best of the soulslike formula and diversifies the gameplay with some of its own unique solutions. The game's style is kept in a dark tone reminiscent of Bloodborne, but closer to medieval/renaissance climates. OverBorder Studio, a small team of developers for whom the title marks their debut in the industry, is responsible for the production.

Storyline

The story of the game takes place in a fallen kingdom, which for many years built its power on various alchemical powers. When the price of using them came to light, an attempt was made to give them up. The country plunged into chaos, and various monsters took to its streets.

The main character of the production is a certain Corvus, a mysterious figure wearing an outfit resembling the clothes of the Doctors of the Plague. He is the only one who knows the causes of the disaster - unfortunately, he has lost his memory of them. Reaching into his memories, he only encounters more mysteries. To understand them, he has to explore more corners of the kingdom and acquire the right items, bringing him closer to saving the situation. The number and type of memories found also determines how Corvus' story will end.

Mechanics

Thymesia, following the patterns of soulslike games, is based mainly on challenging clashes with various enemies and exploration of available locations. The combat system is bloody and dynamic, and its key element is observation of opponents' actions and efficient avoidance or parrying of blows. In addition to ordinary enemies filling the map, from time to time we also meet powerful bosses with unique abilities and behaviors, which forces us to constantly develop new strategies during clashes. For each powerful opponent defeated, we receive diseases - used by Corvus to form special attacks.

The main weapons of our character are a one-handed sword and a dagger. Attacks made with them are very fast, but they have a short range, which forces us to shorten the distance to the opponents. If we want to fight them at a greater distance, we have to reach for Corvus' arsenal of special attacks, linked to the diseases he masters. They can take the shape of specific weapons with a considerable range, visualized in the form of green light. On top of that, we can take the form of a raven in battle to throw feathers at enemies like knives or greatly accelerate our movements.

All of the main character's skills - both basic and those related to bioweapons - are improved with the experience points earned. There are no restrictions on developing our own fighting style - we decide for ourselves what our hero will specialize in, which will determine how effective we will be in duels with given types of opponents.

Technical issues

For a game developed by a small studio, Thymesia at the time of release presented a decent level of graphics, drawing attention with its styling or light work.
