Game Description
Alone in the Dark: Illumination is a PC third-person action-horror shooter that shifts the series toward team-based combat, supernatural abilities, and tactical use of light. The Steam storefront still lists the game under its original name, with Pure FPS as developer and THQ Nordic as publisher; there is no verified current rebrand or replacement edition for this title.
Instead of following the mansion exploration and puzzle structure associated with earlier entries, Illumination takes place in the cursed town of Lorwich. Its central loop is straightforward: enter hostile environments, rescue or support companions, manipulate the map, and use firearms or special powers to expose creatures that are protected by darkness.
Light Is the Core Combat Resource
The defining system is the power of illumination. Ordinary weapons are not always enough against the monsters roaming Lorwich, so players must locate lamps, fire barrels, overhead fixtures, and other environmental light sources. Bringing enemies into these illuminated areas removes their defenses and makes them vulnerable to conventional attacks.
Light is therefore both a defensive tool and a damage setup. Safe zones can give a team room to regroup, but they are not permanently reliable: hostile creatures can extinguish many sources, changing the flow of an encounter and forcing players to reposition.
The game also includes dynamic environmental puzzles. These interactions alter parts of the level or restore access to useful areas, making map awareness important even though the experience is primarily combat-focused. Players who treat every room as a shooting arena will miss much of the tactical structure built around switches, lights, and changing routes.
Four Heroes, Four Combat Roles
Illumination features four playable heroes: the Hunter, Witch, Priest, and Engineer. Each character has a distinct weapon selection, special abilities, and progression path, so the choice affects how a player handles both enemies and environmental threats.
The Hunter represents the most direct firearms-focused approach, while the Witch brings supernatural attacks and electrical powers into combat. The Priest uses abilities connected to sacred light and enemy control, and the Engineer contributes technology-based damage along with the ability to restore certain electrical light sources.
These roles matter most in co-operative multiplayer. A coordinated group can divide responsibilities between damage, crowd control, illumination, and repairs. Steam supports teams of up to four players, while smaller groups or solo players can choose a more demanding experience with fewer available abilities covering the battlefield.
Character progression adds another layer to repeat runs through the campaigns. Heroes unlock additional skills and powers, allowing players to refine a preferred style rather than relying only on basic weapons. The strongest results come from matching each hero's special tools to the light conditions and enemy types in the current area.
Campaign Structure and Enemy Design
The game contains four campaigns set across multiple levels in and beneath Lorwich. This is not a traditional single-player survival-horror campaign built around one uninterrupted mansion investigation. It is a mission-based action experience with repeated combat scenarios, environmental objectives, and progression across separate characters.
Its horror vocabulary draws on Lovecraftian fiction. The enemy roster includes creatures such as Roof Walkers, Shapes, and Spawns, all designed around the game's darkness and illumination rules. The result is less about hiding from a single unstoppable stalker and more about controlling space while supernatural enemies pressure the team.
That structure gives the game a clear mastery loop. Players learn which light sources are dependable, when to spend a character's strongest ability, and how to concentrate attacks on enemies whose defenses have been removed. Replaying levels is most appealing when the focus is improving coordination, unlocking character options, or completing Steam achievements.
What the PC Version Includes
The base PC game is a one-time purchase rather than a free-to-play title. The current Steam listing does not present a season pass, table-style add-on structure, or a separate premium character catalog. Its core content is the four-campaign package with the four playable heroes and their associated weapons and abilities.
Steam lists single-player, co-op, achievements, trading cards, leaderboards, and Family Sharing. The storefront also requires agreement to a third-party EULA and uses the Steam client for access. No separate publisher launcher is identified on the current product listing.
Localization is limited but clearly specified. The interface and subtitles support English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish from Spain, while full audio is listed for English only. Players seeking a broad range of dubbed language options should take that limitation into account before buying.
Controller use has a less straightforward status than the headline Steam features. The store page does not advertise full controller support as a formal feature, while Steam Community support materials include a controller-related guide. Keyboard and mouse should therefore be treated as the safest default for PC play unless the player's controller works correctly with the current setup.
Who Should Play It?
Illumination is aimed at PC players who want third-person shooting with horror themes, class-like character differences, and co-operative teamwork. It is a reasonable fit for groups that enjoy calling out enemy positions, protecting important light sources, and combining different abilities during hectic encounters.
It is less suitable for players expecting the slow exploration, inventory puzzles, fixed-camera tension, and resource scarcity of the original Alone in the Dark formula. The game emphasizes combat repetition and mission completion over extended detective work or a richly branching narrative.
Players who prefer a solo campaign with deliberate survival-horror pacing may also find its design demanding in the wrong way. Solo play is available, but several encounters are structured around overlapping character strengths that are easier to manage when a group can cover multiple roles.
Similar PC Horror Experiences
The closest comparison is not another traditional Alone in the Dark adventure. Illumination shares its combat-forward survival-horror structure with third-person sci-fi survival horror such as Dead Space, although its light mechanics and multiplayer focus make the moment-to-moment play substantially different.
For a more story-led horror campaign with stealth, exploration, and resource pressure, psychological survival horror in the style of The Evil Within is a stronger fit. That comparison also clarifies the main gap in Illumination: it is built around repeatable combat encounters and team composition rather than a tightly authored single-player descent.
Within its own franchise, Illumination is best understood as a radical side step. It keeps the series' supernatural horror identity but replaces the classic investigation loop with co-operative action, character abilities, and environmental light management.
Alone in the Dark: Illumination FAQ
Is Alone in the Dark: Illumination still the official name?
Yes. The current Steam product page continues to use Alone in the Dark: Illumination. It is separate from the later game simply titled Alone in the Dark and has no verified storefront rebrand.
Does the game support co-op?
Yes. Steam lists co-op as an official feature, and the game is designed around teams of up to four heroes. Solo play is also available for players who want to control one character without a full group.
What are the four playable characters?
The roster consists of the Hunter, Witch, Priest, and Engineer. Their weapons, special powers, and interactions with light sources create different combat roles.
How does light work in combat?
Light creates safe areas and weakens enemies that are otherwise heavily protected by darkness. Players can use environmental fixtures and character abilities to illuminate targets, then finish them with weapons or other attacks.
Is this a classic survival-horror game?
Only in theme and atmosphere. Illumination uses horror imagery and Lovecraftian enemies, but its main structure is a mission-based third-person shooter with co-op, character progression, and repeated combat encounters rather than classic puzzle-heavy exploration.
Which languages are supported on PC?
The interface and subtitles support English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish from Spain. English is the only language listed with full audio.
