FrostBound is a roguelike deck-building tower defense set in an endless winter. You are not just dropping towers and hoping for the best. You build a base, manage resources, and use a huge card pool to shape every run. The goal is simple to say and hard to do: withstand relentless waves and push back the eternal frost, much like surviving the frozen apocalypse in Frostpunk.
What you do in FrostBound
Each turn you decide what matters more right now: do you attack, or do you position your troops? The enemies keep advancing, and you’re trying to hold the fortress at all costs. There’s one rule that makes the pressure feel very real - don’t let them break through the leftmost defense line.
And then there’s the cold. The harsh winter forces your units to retreat after a single turn, which means you can’t rely on the same front line forever. You place, you act, you pull back, and you try not to leave a gap at the worst possible moment. In practice, you end up leaning on your sturdiest structures and strongest warriors to keep the defense from collapsing while you rebuild your formation turn by turn.
Deck-building with 500+ cards
The heart of FrostBound is the deck. You get a massive pool of over 500 cards to mix and match, so runs can swing from carefully planned setups to wild experiments. You’re not only collecting power - you’re looking for relationships between cards. One choice can make the next five turns smoother, or it can create a mess you’ll have to survive anyway (been there).
Because it’s roguelike, you’re making decisions with incomplete information. You’ll build an imaginative defense system, chase battlefield synergies, and adjust when the game throws a new kind of pressure at your layout. If you like the feeling of a plan coming together after a few shaky turns, you’ll recognize the vibe immediately.
Elite cards and growth inside a battle
FrostBound also has a unique elite card system. The key idea is that you can experience growth within each battle, not only between battles. So even if the wave is getting uglier, you can still find moments where your options open up and your defenses start to click.
Factions, heroes, buildings, enemies
Variety isn’t just a line on a store page here - it’s baked into the tools you use.
- Four unique factions with distinct playstyles, plus surprising synergy when you combine them.
- 10 starting heroes, each with a signature skill that shapes how you approach turns.
- Over 100 upgradable buildings to reshape the battlefield and reinforce the parts that keep cracking.
- 70+ enemies coming in overwhelming assaults, asking different questions of your setup.
That mix matters because the game keeps you honest. If your plan is too cute, a new enemy type can punish you. If your plan is too safe, you might not scale fast enough. So you iterate. You rebuild. You lean into what’s working and cut what isn’t.
World and tone: frozen civilization
The setting is bleak in a focused way. Civilization has been frozen in time, and you’re protecting what’s left - described as the last spark of human civilization, echoing the harsh societal choices in Frostpunk 2. Along the way you’ll run into a mysterious old man, clashing factions, and twisted foes, with secrets of the world waiting to be discovered. It’s not just waves for the sake of waves - there’s a reason you’re holding the line.
Is FrostBound your kind of run?
If you like turn-based decisions, defensive positioning, and deck-building that rewards smart synergy, FrostBound should make sense fast. You’ll spend your time making tight choices, patching holes caused by retreating units, and sculpting a fortress that can survive “just one more wave”. And when it works, it feels earned.
In the end, FrostBound is about building a defense that can outlast the cold itself. The winter is endless until you make it stop - so, are you holding that leftmost line, or watching it fall?
