Dark Moon is a survival-focused real-time strategy game set on the Moon, seen from a top-down perspective. You play as an engineer from the Engineering Council, sent by the company Moon Shell to oversee a mining infrastructure project. Then everything goes wrong. A massive solar event turns sunlight into something you fear, not chase. Electronics fail, the main communication relay is lost, and the only safe place is in the shadows. Your new rule is simple and brutal: whatever you do, don’t go into the light.
Dark Moon: survive by staying mobile
Your base is not a cozy settlement. It is the Mechaplex, a gigantic engineering vehicle that acts as your mobile command center, your home, and your lifeline. You build structures on top of it, expand what it can do, and use it as the core of your operation. The catch? The Sun is a tireless enemy. You can’t settle in one spot and “play it safe” for long. You plan, you act, and then you move again.
That constant motion changes how you think. Every minute spent debating is a minute the light might catch up. You’ll find yourself making quick calls and then living with them. That’s the vibe here.
Scouting and choosing your path
The lunar surface is not an empty parking lot. It is full of obstacles and unpleasant surprises. Before you roll into a new area, you can scan the terrain with scout drones. It’s the difference between driving confidently into the dark and driving straight into trouble. You never fully know what you’ll encounter, so scouting becomes a habit, not a luxury.
Build, research, and extract resources on the Mechaplex
The Mechaplex is where your strategy lives. On it you:
- build new constructions and expand your functional space
- research increasingly advanced technologies
- gather minerals and use them to improve your odds
- develop mechanical prototypes to support extraction or mobility
You’re basically trying to keep a moving machine-city alive while it crosses hostile ground. Sometimes you’ll lean into better resource gathering. Other times you’ll focus on movement speed because the Sun doesn’t care that your storage is full. It only cares where you are standing.
Crew management with consequences
The Mechaplex would be nothing without the people living on it. Along the way, you meet survivors who may want to join your convoy. New hands can bring useful abilities and even new building platforms, but they also bring needs and problems. You have to provide shelter and food, and you have to deal with the fact that not everyone gets along.
Relationships inside the crew matter. Some people dislike working with someone from a rival country. Others will accept them. Your decisions shape these tensions, and they can escalate. Push too hard, remove the wrong person, and you may risk revolt. And yes, betrayal is on the table in extreme cases. It’s not just “numbers on a bar.” It’s the kind of management that makes you pause and go, “Is this really the best call?”
Moral choices under pressure
Dark Moon leans into morally messy decisions. You might consider throwing out a loyal crew member to make room for someone with more useful skills. You might leave unfortunate survivors behind because you can’t risk betrayal, or because you can’t afford to stay in one place any longer. The game doesn’t let you pretend these choices are clean. You make the call, and you deal with the aftermath.
Non-linear survival and replay variety
Each playthrough can unfold differently. Locations and events may lead to unpredictable results, so you’re not just repeating a fixed checklist. One run might push you into tough resource tradeoffs. Another might test your ability to keep a fragile crew from turning on each other while you keep the Mechaplex moving.
In the end, Dark Moon is about control under stress. You manage a mobile base, balance resources, scout ahead, and make decisions that can sting. If you like strategy where survival pressure forces you to keep moving and keep choosing, this Moon trip should feel uncomfortably interesting.
