Assassin's Creed: Shadows is the thirteenth main entry in Ubisoft’s long-running action series. This time you land in feudal Japan, with the story kicking off in 1579, late in the Sengoku period (also known as Azuchi-Momoyama). If the title sounds mysterious, it’s still the classic Assassin vs Templar conflict at the core - just played out among castles, temples, and shifting political power.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows in feudal Japan

You move through central Japan across three regions: Arima, Iga, and Omi. The world runs on a day-night cycle and dynamic weather, plus seasons that change as the story progresses. That seasonal twist is not just scenery. In spring and summer you can hide in dense foliage and swim in bodies of water, while winter changes routes and risks - even icicles hanging from roofs can be knocked down and give away your position. You’ll notice the difference in how you plan an approach. And yes, sometimes you’ll blame the weather for a messy infiltration. Much like in Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, where tactical stealth in feudal Japan demands precise planning with multiple characters.

Two playable characters: Naoe and Yasuke

You play as two protagonists and can switch between them freely:

  • Naoe - a fictional shinobi assassin, trained by her father Fujibayashi Nagato. She’s built for mobility, sneaking, and creative routes.
  • Yasuke - a historical figure, portrayed here as a powerful samurai and servant of Oda Nobunaga. He’s heavier, louder, and better suited to direct fights.

Their paths cross when Oda’s forces attack Iga, pulling you into a conflict involving Nagato and local resistance. At first the duo isn’t exactly friendly, but cooperation becomes the practical choice. Your relationships also matter, including romance options with certain characters.

Movement and parkour

You climb, traverse obstacles, and use parkour-style movement. Naoe has a clear edge in agility. She can also crawl on the ground, and she carries a rope with a hook that lets you swing over gaps or climb in ways Yasuke simply can’t. If you like scouting rooftops and threading needle-tight routes, you’ll probably spend a lot of time as her. Stealth that leans into shadows

Compared to earlier entries, stealth is a major focus and it’s more system-driven. You still slip behind enemies or move above them, and you can hide in vegetation. The big change is that you can also hide in shadows created by dynamic lighting. A visibility indicator tells you how exposed you are, and you can destroy light sources like lanterns to stay concealed. It’s the kind of mechanic that makes you pause for a second and think: do you rush, or do you “fix” the lighting first?

Both characters can sneak, but Naoe is the specialist. Yasuke can hide too, yet his heavy gear and build make stealth less forgiving. You also have Eagle Vision to locate enemies and even see them through walls. And if you prefer a cleaner conscience or just a quieter route, you can knock enemies out instead of killing them from stealth.

Combat styles and weapons

When stealth breaks (or when you choose chaos), combat highlights how different the protagonists are. Naoe relies on dodges and deflections. Yasuke can block and parry, giving him a sturdier feel in open fights. Weapons include the iconic hidden blade, plus:

  • Katana (used by both characters)
  • Kanabo and naginata
  • Bow and arquebus (used by Yasuke)
  • Kunai, shuriken, and smoke bombs (used by Naoe)

The game also uses a newer version of the Anvil engine, featuring advanced global illumination and plenty of destructible objects - including things you can slice apart with a katana. It’s a small detail that can make encounters feel a bit more physical.

RPG progression, targets, and side activities

You get RPG systems with separate skill trees for each hero and for weapon types. Experience points are shared between the two characters, so switching doesn’t feel like starting over. You collect better gear, build proficiency with specific weapons as you use them, and craft equipment - including creating your own katanas from gathered components.

The campaign structure is driven by eliminating designated targets, and you can choose the order. Along the way you can take on optional activities like visiting castles and temples, finding shrines, and tracking down works of art. You can also build a spy network and send agents on missions, then use the information they bring back during main objectives.

How long is it and what modes are included?

Player reports put the main story at around 30 hours. If you chase side content heavily, you can spend 75-80 hours or more. It’s singleplayer only - no co-op and no other multiplayer modes.

If you want an open-world Assassin’s Creed with a rebuilt stealth layer, a Japan setting, and the option to swap between a shinobi and a samurai, Assassin's Creed: Shadows is built around exactly that kind of play.
