The Gold River Project is a third-person (TPP) survival sandbox for PC, released in Early Access. You are dropped into a private nature reserve in the northwestern part of North America, and the setup is not just “go survive” - you’re unwillingly taking part in a mysterious survival experiment. So yes, you’re hungry and cold like in any good wilderness story, but you’re also being watched. That little detail changes the vibe.

What you do in The Gold River Project

You play as one of the people abandoned by a guide and forced to push through weeks of rough living. You explore an open world on foot, and when the terrain turns into water, you switch to a canoe to move across the many lakes. The place is beautiful in that “why is everything trying to kill me?” way.

The core loop is simple and physical: you roam, you collect, you plan your next day. Exploration matters because it’s how you learn the area and how you keep yourself alive. Food is a constant concern, and so are materials for crafting. Some days you’ll feel prepared. Other days you’ll realize you should not have wandered that far from camp. It happens.

The experiment angle: you’re not alone out there

As you progress, you discover more about the experiment surrounding you. You notice cameras tracking your movement. You stumble into built-for-purpose complexes and find different installations. It’s not presented as a simple “story cutscene thing” - it’s part of the environment you move through.

There’s also a practical twist: locations of selected world elements (like substations, supply points, and points of interest) are randomized. That means you can’t rely on memorizing one perfect route forever. If you like adapting and scouting, you’ll appreciate it. If you like absolute certainty, you’ll be doing more recon.

Exploration, resources, and crafting

To stay alive, you gather resources. Food comes from hunting and from farming the land. Materials come from the world and feed into a crafting system. Crafting lets you create items for your own use, but also for trading. And while you’re at it, you gradually expand your camp. It’s that satisfying survival rhythm: small upgrades, small comforts, slightly less panic when night comes.

Typical survival priorities

  • Explore to find resources and points of interest
  • Hunt and farm to secure food
  • Craft useful items and gear
  • Build up and improve your camp over time

Combat and staying alive when predators show up

This reserve is not a peaceful hike. Predatory animals hide in dense vegetation, and you need to watch your surroundings. When it’s time to fight, you can use melee weapons or firearms. And you’re not locked into one style: you can go in directly, or try stealth and quiet takedowns. Sometimes you’ll choose stealth because it feels smart. Sometimes you’ll choose it because you’re low on supplies and a loud fight sounds like a terrible idea.

Solo or online co-op

The Gold River Project can be played in singleplayer or in online co-op. Going alone makes every decision heavier - you carry all the risk. Co-op can change the feel into something more like a shared expedition: one of you scouts, one gathers, another keeps an eye out. Either way, you’re still inside the same experiment. You’re just facing it with one pair of hands or several.

Tech and Early Access expectations

The game uses Unreal Engine 5. It’s also explicitly an Early Access release (dated January 23, 2026 for Early Access). So it’s reasonable to approach it like a project that’s growing: you jump in for the core survival sandbox, the open-world exploration, and the experiment mystery, and you keep your expectations flexible.

If you want a TPP open-world survival game where you canoe across lakes, build up a camp, and slowly piece together what’s really happening around you, The Gold River Project is clearly aiming at that mix of wilderness grit and uneasy surveillance.
