FAR: Changing Tides is a side-scrolling adventure set in a flooded post-apocalyptic world. You play as a boy traveling across empty waters on board a distinctive ship, looking for a new beginning. It is the second game in Okomotive's atmospheric series, the first being FAR: Lone Sails, but the focus here is simple: a quiet journey, a strange world, and the bond between you and your vessel.
What kind of game is FAR: Changing Tides?
This is not a fast action game. You move at a slow, deliberate pace. Much of the experience comes from sailing, maintaining your ship, and taking in the scenery. The mood is calm, sometimes lonely, sometimes tense. If you like games that let you breathe a little, this one clearly leans that way.
You watch the action from the side in a 2.5D view. As you travel through flooded valleys, drowned enclaves, ruins of an old civilization, and stormy stretches of sea, you gradually learn how your ship works. And yes, that process is a big part of the appeal.
What do you actually do?
Your main task is to captain the ship yourself. You handle the onboard systems, keep the vessel moving, and react when things go wrong. That means raising the mast, adjusting sails, lighting the furnace, unlocking new parts, and making sure the machine stays functional.
FAR: Changing Tides connects exploration with maintenance in a natural way. You move forward thanks to your ship's systems, but progress depends on how well you manage them. Fuel does not appear out of nowhere. Damage does not fix itself. So you leave the deck, dive into the depths, and search for fuel and salvage. It is a nice loop - simple, but satisfying.
- Sail through flooded landscapes and ruins
- Operate and maintain the ship
- Dive for fuel and useful materials
- Repair faults and unlock new functions
- Solve light environmental puzzles to clear the way
Puzzles and pace
The obstacles you find are usually tied to the environment. When your route is blocked, you step off the ship and solve fairly straightforward puzzles. These are not brutal brain-burners. They are there to vary the rhythm and support the journey rather than dominate it. Honestly, that fits the game well.
The world and atmosphere in FAR: Changing Tides
The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting. You travel through a world devastated by floods, where the remains of a once-great society sit half-submerged beneath the water. The art is hand-painted, and the visual style reinforces the quiet, melancholic tone. It looks artistic without feeling vague.
The soundtrack also matters. It reacts to what you do and to what happens around you, which helps the world feel more alive. Sometimes the result is calm reflection. Sometimes the tension rises when storms or danger appear. Small touch, big effect.
Is FAR: Changing Tides worth playing?
If you want a short, atmospheric adventure built around exploration, ship management, and a meditative rhythm, FAR: Changing Tides has a clear identity. It will likely work best for you if you enjoy solitary journeys, environmental storytelling, and mechanics that are easy to grasp but still engaging. If you need constant action, you may find it too restrained. But if the idea of quietly crossing a flooded world on a ship sounds good, FAR: Changing Tides makes that journey the whole point.
