Game Description

The Crust PC is a lunar colony simulation that combines city building, resource management, and factory automation. The storefront name remains The Crust, with no separate rebrand replacing it. The live 1.0 build adds the completed multi-ending campaign, Planning Mode, Sandbox 2.0, global events, and native macOS and Linux versions.

Current Name and Storefront Status

The game is developed by VEOM Studio and published by Crytivo. You take the role of the CEO of CRUST Corp., a lunar colonization company responsible for turning the Moon into an industrial foothold for humanity.

Steam and Epic still list the product under the official name The Crust. There is no renamed definitive edition replacing it. Steam's current 1.0 announcement confirms that the full build is live, although older Early Access labels can remain visible in storefront metadata during the transition.

The Crust is single-player. Its online leaderboard records statistics such as base value and growth, but it does not add cooperative construction, competitive matches, or split-screen play.

How the Lunar Colony Plays

The game uses an overhead, rotatable 3D management view that lets you move between surface infrastructure, underground excavation levels, and the wider orbital or global map. The layered presentation makes vertical logistics as important as the position of buildings on the surface.

Your opening priorities are straightforward but interconnected: scan the lunar terrain, extract regolith and other deposits, construct processing machinery, and keep the colony powered with satellites and batteries. Three research trees gradually expand what your settlement can produce and how efficiently it can operate.

Rover expeditions extend the loop beyond the base. You can investigate remote lunar locations, abandoned structures, and unusual geological formations while bringing back resources, information, and research opportunities that support the next stage of expansion.

The result is a management game where survival is mostly expressed through supply reliability. A factory can be built correctly and still fail if energy, storage, transport, staffing, or research priorities are poorly balanced.

Automation Across Surface and Subsurface

Conveyors and drones form the backbone of The Crust. They move materials between extraction points, underground production rooms, warehouses, processing modules, and the surface systems used for trade and transport.

Planning Mode is one of the most important 1.0 additions. You can lay out future modules and conveyor routes before committing to construction, copy modules together with their recipes, and track the resources required to complete a larger production plan.

The new road system gives surface trucks clearer routes and parking areas. Trucks use the road network when selecting routes, which makes the placement of cargo infrastructure matter instead of treating the entire surface as an undifferentiated transport field.

Later systems add more specialized logistics through the Flight Control Center, auto-purchase and auto-sell modes, the Mobile Drilling Rig, harvesters, Outposts, and interplanetary contracts. The economy grows from a small lunar factory into a network of extraction and delivery operations.

Colonists, Research, and the Wider Economy

Colonists are not decorative population counters. Their health, mood, needs, traits, and skills affect how well the colony functions, while selected specialists can operate machinery or contribute to research.

The 1.0 build adds more direct personnel control through salaries, dismissals, and the Training Center. Colonists can improve their professional abilities, but poor working conditions and morale management can also make valuable staff leave the colony.

Food, medicine, housing, comfort, education, entertainment, and workplace assignments create a second management layer beneath the factory. Production efficiency therefore depends on both machine throughput and the condition of the people operating the settlement.

Trade connects the Moon to Earth. Contracts from corporations, states, and rival factions ask for specific resources, while your decisions can influence political relationships and the wider market. Selling everything immediately is not always the strongest strategy when future contracts depend on scarce materials.

Campaign, Sandbox 2.0, and Lunar Threats

The completed story campaign has multiple endings and uses contracts, expeditions, faction relationships, and difficult decisions to give the industrial systems a narrative purpose. The reworked prologue introduces the essential construction and colony-management basics before the wider campaign opens up.

Sandbox 2.0 is aimed at players who want more control over their starting conditions. You can select a starting location on the Moon, adjust custom settings, use generation seeds, and choose from additional terrain maps with different resource layouts.

The colony also faces global events rather than only predictable production shortages. Meteorite showers, solar flares, and epidemics can damage infrastructure, reduce efficiency, or threaten colonists, while the anti-meteorite laser cannon provides a costly way to protect important sections of the base.

These systems give The Crust two different rhythms: a directed campaign for narrative progression and a flexible sandbox for testing layouts, resource priorities, and long-term automation designs.

Editions and Current Content Model

The Crust is a paid base game rather than a free-to-play colony builder. The main construction, exploration, campaign, colonist, and automation systems belong to the core product.

The current content catalog lists two optional add-ons: The Crust - Supporter Pack and The Crust Complete Soundtrack Pack. The Artemis Edition bundle combines the base game with the soundtrack and Supporter Pack.

The official listings reviewed do not present a season pass, subscription model, or free-to-play conversion. Buyers should treat the Supporter Pack and soundtrack as separate extras rather than requirements for accessing the main campaign or Sandbox 2.0.

PC Features, Platforms, and Localization

Steam lists Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and single-player support. Epic lists Cloud Saves and Single Player, while its storefront requires an Epic ID for that version.

The 1.0 build adds official macOS and Linux ports alongside the Windows version. This makes the current PC release broader than the earlier Windows-focused Early Access build.

The interface is designed around detailed construction and logistics management. The storefronts do not clearly advertise a full-controller-support badge, so keyboard and mouse should be treated as the primary input. Customizable hotkeys are available for the main functions and menus.

Steam currently shows 13 supported languages, with English and Russian offering full audio. French, German, Spanish variants, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Italian, Japanese, and Turkish are listed for interface and subtitle support, with exact availability varying between storefronts.

Steam and Epic provide the launcher environments for their respective editions. The official storefront information reviewed does not identify a separate launcher or dedicated anti-cheat system.

Who Should Play The Crust?

The Crust suits players who enjoy layered management systems, long production chains, careful base layouts, and the satisfaction of turning a fragile outpost into a functioning industrial network.

It is less suitable for players looking for multiplayer, direct character control, fast action, or a simple city builder with only cosmetic population management. The game expects you to read systems, plan infrastructure, and solve problems before they interrupt production.

Players who want a more population-focused planetary city builder can compare it with the dome-and-colonist pressure of Surviving Mars Relaunched. The Crust puts more emphasis on extraction, underground construction, and automated industry.

For factory-first optimization, Factorio's belt-driven automation sandbox is the closer comparison. If disaster management and post-apocalyptic settlement are more appealing, Surviving the Aftermath's specialist-led colony survival offers a different kind of pressure.

The Crust FAQ

These are the practical questions that matter most when choosing the current PC edition of The Crust.

Is The Crust still called The Crust on PC?

Yes. Steam and Epic continue to use The Crust as the official product name. The Crust 1.0 is the current build, not a separate rebrand or replacement title.

Is The Crust multiplayer or cooperative?

No. The game is presented as single-player. Its online leaderboard tracks colony statistics, but there is no listed cooperative mode, competitive multiplayer, or split-screen support.

What does the paid base game include?

The base game includes the lunar colony, campaign, Sandbox 2.0, resource extraction, conveyor and drone automation, colonist management, research, expeditions, trade, Outposts, and global events. The Supporter Pack and Complete Soundtrack Pack are optional extras.

Does The Crust support controllers?

The official storefront pages do not clearly promise full controller support. Because the game relies on dense construction menus and customizable hotkeys, keyboard and mouse are the safer choice for regular play.

What is the difference between the campaign and Sandbox 2.0?

The campaign follows a completed story with multiple endings and structured decisions. Sandbox 2.0 focuses on replayable colony design, letting you adjust starting locations, terrain maps, generation seeds, resources, and custom game settings.
