Game Description
Dungeons 2 PC is a dungeon-management strategy game that combines underground base building with tactical real-time strategy on the overworld. Current Steam and GOG listings still use the name Dungeons 2; the Steam Complete Edition is a bundle, not a verified rebrand or replacement title. Developed by Realmforge Studios and published by Kalypso Media Digital, it puts you in control of the Dungeon Lord, an evil ruler expanding from the underworld into human territory.
Two layers of strategy
The defining feature of Dungeons 2 is its split between the underworld dungeon and the surface overworld. Underground, you excavate corridors, place rooms, manage creatures, research upgrades, produce resources, and prepare defenses against invading heroes.
On the surface, the game shifts into real-time strategy combat. You select groups of monsters, issue movement and attack commands, capture sectors, enter neutral dungeons, and destroy the Alliance’s settlements. Success depends on moving between both layers without allowing either your economy or your front line to collapse.
This is not a passive base builder. The Dungeon Lord’s forces must eventually leave the safety of the dungeon and turn preparation into conquest. The overworld also supplies evilness points, which unlock new rooms, units, traps, and improvements for the underground base.
Building an evil dungeon
Dungeon construction revolves around practical rooms rather than decoration. Little Snots excavate passages, mine gold, brew beer, build structures, and maintain the basic labor system. Your monsters then use specialized rooms to train, research, recover, upgrade equipment, and satisfy their needs.
The Horde and Demons are the game’s two playable factions, and they do not manage their lairs in exactly the same way. Horde creatures require beer as part of their routine, while demons depend on admiration supplied through the Hall of Admiration. Both factions still need wages, work, rest, and ways to control boredom.
Ignoring those needs creates more than a cosmetic problem. Unhappy units can become enraged, stop working, attack servants, or go on strike in the Throne Room. The monster-needs system gives the dungeon economy a constant maintenance layer, while rooms such as the Brewery, Arena, Treasury, Crystal Chamber, Chaos Forge, and Guard Room each support a different part of the operation.
Defensive planning matters as well. You can research and deploy doors and traps, protect important routes, and turn narrow corridors into controlled approaches. The Horde and Demon factions have distinct room sets, creatures, spells, and traps, so the best layout depends on which force you are leading.
The Hand of Terror and direct control
The Dungeon Lord influences the action through the Hand of Terror, a direct-intervention tool used to pick up and drop units, mark excavation areas, direct workers, and discipline creatures that are not doing their jobs. It gives the management layer a physical interface instead of reducing every order to a menu command.
Inside the dungeon, creatures generally follow their own routines when their needs are satisfied. On the overworld, they become a more conventional RTS army under direct command. That contrast is central to the game’s identity: the same units can be autonomous workers below ground and tightly controlled soldiers above it.
Spells add another layer of intervention. The factions use different abilities, including emergency movement, battlefield attacks, protective effects, summons, and resource conversions. The result is a management game where the player is constantly deciding whether to improve the dungeon, respond to an invasion, or push deeper into enemy territory.
Campaign, skirmish, and multiplayer
The single-player campaign introduces the dungeon systems gradually through a story built around the Dungeon Lord’s attempt to devastate the human Alliance. It includes two playable factions, multiple creature types, heroes, side objectives, and the transition from underground management to overworld warfare.
Skirmish mode provides sandbox maps for players who want to build, research, expand, and conquer without following the campaign structure. Some maps include additional tasks, making skirmish more than a simple repeat of the main missions.
Multiplayer supports up to four players through online or local-network matches. Each player manages a separate dungeon, while a shared overworld connects the competing lairs. Depending on the selected rules, victory can involve controlling sectors, capturing a particular area, or eliminating opponents. The four-player maps can also support team play.
This multiplayer structure is worth clarifying because players do not simply raid one another’s underground rooms from the start. The main contest takes place across the connected overworld, where players expand, generate evilness, defend sectors, and send armies into conflict.
Content model and DLC
Dungeons 2 is a paid game with optional paid add-ons rather than a free-to-play service. The current Steam listing separates the base game from three paid DLC packs: A Game of Winter, A Chance of Dragons, and A Song of Sand and Fire.
The storefront also lists A Clash of Pumpkins as free additional content. The Steam Complete Edition bundles the base game with the three paid expansions, while the GOG package lists the base game with A Clash of Pumpkins and presents the other expansions separately.
The DLC model is focused on extra scenarios, maps, missions, and themed content rather than a new game-wide progression system. Players mainly interested in the core campaign, faction systems, skirmish maps, and multiplayer can start with the base game; completion-minded players should compare the bundle contents before purchasing.
PC features and storefront differences
The PC version is designed around keyboard-and-mouse control, which suits room placement, excavation orders, unit selection, minimap navigation, and simultaneous management of the dungeon and overworld. Steam lists Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards, Family Sharing, and cross-platform multiplayer among its platform features.
Steam also lists the optional Kalypso Launcher as third-party DRM and notes that account registration is optional. The GOG edition is listed as DRM-free and supports offline play without requiring GOG Galaxy. GOG also lists Windows, Linux, and macOS support, while storefront-specific multiplayer behavior can depend on the client and version used.
Localization includes English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Czech, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese in the Steam language table, with full audio available in a smaller selection of those languages. Players who need a specific voice track should distinguish between interface, subtitle, and audio support before buying.
Who should play Dungeons 2?
Dungeons 2 is a good fit for players who want villain-led fantasy strategy, practical dungeon construction, creature management, and active overworld battles in the same campaign. It also suits fans of games where resource production and military expansion are tightly connected.
Players looking for a more direct version of the dungeon-management formula can compare it with later dungeon strategy games such as Dungeons 3, while those who prefer a modern secret-lair management setting may find a related structure in isometric villain-management games like Evil Genius 2: World Domination. These are comparisons of design priorities, not identical substitutes.
The game is less suitable for anyone seeking a pure city builder, a highly competitive esports RTS, or a management sandbox that never leaves the dungeon. Its central challenge comes from switching attention between autonomous underground routines and direct surface warfare.
