Game Description
Hades Battle Out of Hell is the catalog name often used for Hades, while current PC storefronts list the game simply as Hades. Developed and published by Supergiant Games, it is an isometric action roguelite built around repeated escape attempts, reactive combat, randomized chambers, permanent upgrades, and a fully voiced story that continues after every defeat.
Escape attempts built around fast combat
You play as Zagreus, the immortal Prince of the Underworld, attempting to break out of his father Hades' realm. Each run moves through shifting chambers across regions such as Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Styx before the final confrontation. Room layouts, rewards, enemies, and encounters change between attempts, but the broader Underworld remains readable enough to support long-term mastery.
The combat system is direct and highly mobile. Zagreus can chain a basic attack, special attack, cast, dash, and Call ability while managing enemy positioning and attack patterns. The dash is central to both defense and offense, letting skilled players pass through danger, reposition behind targets, or create openings for heavier attacks.
Hades uses six core weapon types known as the Infernal Arms: the Stygian Blade, Eternal Spear, Shield of Chaos, Heart-Seeking Bow, Twin Fists, and Adamant Rail. Each weapon changes the rhythm of a run, while alternate weapon Aspects alter individual movesets and encourage different build priorities.
Boons, builds, and permanent progression
Olympian gods offer Boons that modify attacks, specials, casts, dashes, and other abilities. Zeus can add lightning effects, Athena can provide deflection, Poseidon can create knockback-focused attacks, and other gods push builds toward different damage types or tactical roles. The important choice is not simply selecting the strongest boon, but finding combinations that work with the chosen weapon and the rest of the run.
Hammer upgrades can significantly change how an Infernal Arm behaves, while Daedalus Hammer choices, godly Boons, Poms of Power, and temporary currencies create a build that is rarely identical to the previous attempt. Build synergy matters because a modest upgrade with the right interaction can outperform a stronger effect that does not match the weapon's attack pattern.
Death ends the current run but does not erase all progress. Zagreus returns to the House of Hades with permanent resources such as Darkness, keys, gemstones, Nectar, and Titan Blood. The Mirror of Night provides lasting character upgrades, while the House Contractor unlocks changes to the Underworld and the House itself.
Players who enjoy a similarly demanding loop of procedural routes, temporary equipment, and permanent unlocks may find the combat-focused structure of action roguelites like Dead Cells familiar, although Hades places much more emphasis on voiced character relationships and story progression.
A story that advances through failure
Hades separates itself from many action roguelites through its relationship system. Characters remember Zagreus' previous attempts, react to his successes and failures, and unlock new conversations as the wider family conflict develops. The House of Hades functions as a narrative hub rather than a simple pause screen between runs.
You can build relationships with gods, shades, and other residents by giving them Nectar and completing related events. Keepsakes earned through these relationships provide run-specific benefits, while later upgrades and companion abilities add further tactical options without turning the game into a conventional party RPG.
The narrative is designed to work alongside repetition. Returning to the House after a failed escape can reveal new dialogue, quests, prophecies, relationship scenes, or gameplay options. This means a defeat often provides information and story progress even when the run itself produced no successful escape.
Difficulty options and long-term mastery
Hades is challenging, but it does not rely on a single fixed difficulty curve. God Mode increases Zagreus' damage resistance and becomes more effective after additional deaths, giving players a gradual accessibility option without removing the core combat loop.
Players seeking a harsher experience can use Hell Mode or the late-game Pact of Punishment. The Pact lets you add specific conditions that raise enemy pressure, restrict resources, alter boss encounters, or change the rules of a run. These modifiers create a structured mastery ladder rather than a generic harder setting.
The game also includes prophecies, weapon aspects, keepsakes, relationships, House Contractor projects, fishing, and cosmetic unlocks. These systems give experienced players objectives beyond simply reaching the surface, while newer players can focus on improving one weapon or learning one region at a time.
Content model and current PC storefront name
The current Steam and Epic Games Store listings use the name Hades. “Battle Out of Hell” is associated with the game's marketing copy and older catalog naming, not a separate current PC edition or replacement version.
Hades is sold as a paid single-player game rather than a free-to-play service. The complete gameplay package is included in the base purchase, and current storefront listings identify the Hades Original Soundtrack as a separate add-on. There is no verified gameplay season pass or paid expansion lineup that needs to be purchased to access the main experience.
The game is not built around online services, competitive seasons, or recurring content drops. Its replay value comes from changing runs, weapon Aspects, Pact conditions, relationship events, permanent upgrades, and player mastery.
PC features, controls, and localization
The PC versions support keyboard and mouse play as well as controller support. Steam provides achievements, cloud saving, trading cards, Family Sharing, and Remote Play features. Supergiant's technical documentation also confirms support for Steam Deck play and cross-saves between PC versions on Steam or the Epic Games Store and Nintendo Switch.
Supergiant states that the computer versions are DRM-free. Players still use the relevant storefront launcher for installation, updates, cloud features, and account management, but the game itself does not require a separate always-online DRM check.
Hades is a solo experience. It does not include online multiplayer, local co-op, split-screen play, or a second playable character for shared runs. That limitation is deliberate: the combat timing, narrative structure, and progression systems were designed around one player controlling Zagreus.
English is supported for both text and voiceover. Full text translations are available in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Polish, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
Who should play Hades on PC?
Hades is a strong fit for players who enjoy fast isometric combat, repeated runs, build experimentation, and story-heavy progression. It works particularly well for players who want a roguelite that respects short sessions while still offering extensive long-term goals.
The game may be a poor fit if you want a traditional linear campaign, multiplayer support, or a permanent character build that never resets between encounters. Temporary run power disappears after death, and improvement depends partly on learning enemy patterns, boss phases, weapon ranges, and effective boon combinations.
Players who prefer projectile-heavy room clearing can also compare its movement and pattern-reading demands with top-down bullet-hell roguelikes such as Enter the Gungeon. Hades is less focused on firearms and dense projectile patterns, but both games reward deliberate movement, route knowledge, and repeated practice.
Hades FAQ
Is Hades Battle Out of Hell the current PC name?
No. Current Steam and Epic listings use Hades. Battle Out of Hell is a catalog or marketing phrase associated with the game rather than a separate current storefront edition.
Is Hades a roguelike or a roguelite?
It is commonly described as an action roguelite or rogue-like dungeon crawler. Runs use randomized chambers and temporary upgrades, while the Mirror of Night, weapon Aspects, relationships, prophecies, and other systems provide permanent progression.
Does Hades have co-op or multiplayer on PC?
No. Hades is strictly single-player and does not offer online co-op, local multiplayer, or split-screen support.
What is included in the base PC game?
The base purchase includes the complete Hades gameplay experience, including its Underworld regions, Infernal Arms, Olympian Boons, story events, permanent progression, difficulty modifiers, and post-completion mastery systems. The soundtrack is listed separately on storefronts.
Does Hades support controllers and Steam Deck?
Yes. The PC version supports controllers, and Supergiant provides Steam Deck guidance. The game can also synchronize saves between supported PC storefront versions and Nintendo Switch through its cross-save feature.
Is God Mode an easy mode?
God Mode is an accessibility-focused difficulty option that increases Zagreus' damage resistance and becomes stronger after additional deaths. It does not replace the game's combat, build, or story systems, so players can still learn the same weapons, bosses, and encounters.
