Game Description

Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager is a PC strategy roguelite that reverses the usual dungeon-crawler formula. Instead of guiding heroes through traps and monsters, you work for the Dungeons Company, recruit a hostile workforce, prepare layered defenses, and watch adventurers attempt to survive your dungeon. Steam, GOG, and Ubisoft use the “Career of a Dungeon Manager” name, while the Epic Games Store currently displays “Career of a Dungeon Master” in its product heading; no verified replacement edition or full rebrand has been found.

Developed by Goblinz Studio and published by Goblinz Publishing, the game sits between dungeon management, turn-based tactics, fantasy RPG systems, and roguelite progression. It is a single-player experience built around repeated careers, changing enemy groups, resource decisions, and the gradual improvement of each dungeon master.

Run the dungeon from the villain’s side

Each attempt begins with a management phase. You inspect the approaching hero party, study its damage types and resistances, then choose a useful combination of monsters, traps, and spells. The goal is not simply to inflict the highest damage. A defense may instead focus on breaking morale, exploiting elemental weaknesses, or weakening the party before it reaches the final room.

When the crawl begins, heroes move through the dungeon and trigger the defenses you prepared. Traps can damage adventurers or improve the conditions for a monster encounter. Once a hero group reaches a monster group, combat shifts into a side-view 3v3 turn-based battle, giving your lineup, placement, resistances, and ability order direct tactical importance.

Combat can defeat heroes through health damage, but morale is equally important. A party that loses its nerve may flee, allowing you to complete the defense without killing every opponent. This creates two distinct tactical routes: build a roster around physical or elemental damage, or use morale damage and psychological pressure to make the expedition collapse.

The structure is closer to a defensive roguelite than a traditional construction simulator. You do not freely sculpt a large real-time fortress room by room. Instead, you manage a sequence of encounters, select defenses for upcoming threats, and make the most of the rooms, monsters, traps, and resources available during the current career.

Monsters, motivation, and corporate pressure

Your creatures are employees as much as they are combat units. Recruitment, training, promotion, and recovery all matter because a powerful monster that is unavailable or poorly motivated cannot contribute to the next defense. Fallen monsters return to service, but their motivation can suffer, creating a longer-term management problem rather than a simple permanent-death system.

Between battles, random events interrupt the schedule. Employee disputes, workplace problems, financial choices, and other corporate complications can provide rewards, impose penalties, or force you to choose between immediate stability and future power. These events give the management layer its own identity instead of treating it as a menu between fights.

Gold, blood, tears, artefacts, monsters, traps, and other rewards support different parts of the economy. Blood and tears are tied to the fate of defeated or frightened heroes, while gold pays for useful improvements and recruitment. Spending everything on a stronger roster can leave you exposed when a critical trap, spell, or recovery option becomes available.

The game’s main strategic skill is reading the encounter before committing your defense. A group with strong physical resistance may require magic or morale pressure. A party with dangerous back-row abilities may demand a trap sequence that reduces its options before combat. The best roster is therefore situational, not universal.

Three masters, different careers

The base game includes three playable dungeon masters: the Enchantress, the Engineer, and the Slaveholder. Each master changes the available monsters, abilities, and preferred approach, so choosing a new master is more than selecting a different portrait.

The Enchantress emphasizes magical tools and supernatural support. The Engineer leans into mechanical defenses and specialized dungeon technology. The Slaveholder is closely associated with morale-focused control and a different approach to managing monsters. Their separate campaigns encourage experimentation with different forms of damage, defense, and resource use.

Progression combines master improvements with roguelite persistence. A run can end in failure, but successful careers let you retain some of your master’s bonuses and unlock stronger options. That persistence does not remove the need to adapt: the heroes, events, rewards, and available solutions still change from one attempt to another.

Beyond the main career structure, the PC version includes Endless Mode and Ascension Mode. These modes extend the game beyond a standard campaign by increasing the pressure and testing how well a build survives escalating restrictions. They are aimed at players who enjoy refinement, replayability, and increasingly hostile rule sets rather than a conventional scripted ending.

Base game and paid content

Legend of Keepers is a premium single-player game rather than a free-to-play service. The base purchase contains the core dungeon-management loop, three masters, their campaigns, the monster and trap systems, random events, and the persistent progression framework.

The PC catalog lists three gameplay expansions: Return of the Goddess, Feed the Troll, and Soul Smugglers. Each adds a new master, a dedicated set of missions, additional monsters, traps, artefacts, and mechanics that change how a career is played.

Return of the Goddess introduces the Goddess master, mummy-themed content, sarcophagi choices, and a pyramid environment. Feed the Troll adds the Shaman master, spirit monsters, conjurations, and its own gameplay rules. Soul Smugglers adds the Skeleton Lord, Psychopomp monsters, Soul Fragment mechanics, and a graveyard-oriented promotion system.

A separate Supporter Pack is also listed on PC. It should not be confused with a fourth gameplay campaign: the substantial playable additions are the three named expansions, while the Supporter Pack belongs to the wider collection and bonus-content catalog.

Who should play it?

This is a strong fit for players who enjoy planning around enemy information rather than controlling a fast-moving hero. It rewards careful roster construction, resistance checks, damage-type synergies, and the ability to accept that a promising defense may fail because the available tools do not match the incoming party.

Players who prefer a more traditional hero-side campaign may find the reversed perspective unusual. You do not explore a dungeon with a permanent adventuring party, and the main pleasure comes from preparation, observation, and seeing a plan resolve. The game is also deliberately run-based, so it expects repeated careers instead of one uninterrupted progression path.

Fans of dark fantasy management with a comic corporate tone should find more overlap here than in a conventional tower-defense title. The Dungeons Company framing turns staffing, morale, promotions, and employee problems into part of the joke as well as part of the strategy.

PC features, controls, and storefront differences

The Steam edition advertises full controller support, Steam Cloud, achievements, trading cards, leaderboards, Family Sharing, and Steam Workshop support. Workshop content can modify monsters directly in-game, giving the PC version an optional community layer beyond the standard campaigns.

The game uses a clear 2D side perspective during combat and menu-driven management screens between encounters. Keyboard and mouse work naturally for selecting units, comparing resistances, and organizing defenses, while controller support makes the experience suitable for players who prefer gamepad input.

Storefront access depends on where you buy it. The GOG edition is advertised as DRM-free and does not require activation or an online connection for play. Steam uses the Steam client and its associated services, while the Ubisoft Connect PC edition requires a Ubisoft account and launcher.

Text localization covers English, French, Italian, German, Spanish variants, Portuguese-Brazil, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, and Czech on the main PC listings. The storefront data identifies English as the full-audio language, with the other listed languages primarily providing interface and subtitle localization. No dedicated anti-cheat system or competitive online mode is advertised.

Comparable games on PC

Players who want a harsher roster-management game with turn-based combat can compare it with gothic tactical roguelites such as Darkest Dungeon. Both games make preparation, stress or morale, team composition, and attrition important, but Legend of Keepers reverses the role and asks you to arrange the threats.

For a more direct villain-side comparison, dark turn-based strategy games like Iratus: Lord of the Dead also let you build an evil force and exploit enemy weaknesses. Iratus centers on crafting undead minions from fallen enemies, whereas Legend of Keepers focuses more strongly on traps, room sequencing, corporate events, and dungeon defense.

The run-based decision structure also has some kinship with turn-based roguelite deckbuilders such as Slay the Spire. The combat systems are different, but both games reward route planning, adapting to imperfect options, and building a strategy from the tools offered during the current run.

Legend of Keepers FAQ

What is the current PC name of Legend of Keepers?

The main PC listings use Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager. Epic currently displays “Career of a Dungeon Master” in its product heading, and older promotional references also use that wording. This is a storefront naming inconsistency, not a verified replacement edition or full rebrand.

Is Legend of Keepers multiplayer or co-op?

No. The PC game is presented as a single-player strategy roguelite. It does not advertise online co-op, split-screen play, or competitive multiplayer for its core dungeon-management experience.

What do you do in Legend of Keepers?

You manage a dungeon for the Dungeons Company. You recruit and train monsters, stock traps, respond to workplace events, study invading heroes, arrange defenses, and direct turn-based fights when adventurers reach your monster groups.

Does the game have a traditional dungeon-building mode?

Not in the same sense as a real-time fortress-construction simulator. The game uses a structured dungeon-defense format where you prepare monster groups and traps for incoming parties, then manage the career and its resources between encounters.

How many dungeon masters are in the base game?

The base game has three masters: the Enchantress, Engineer, and Slaveholder. Each has distinct abilities, recruits, and campaign identity. The three paid gameplay expansions add further masters, including the Goddess, Shaman, and Skeleton Lord.

Does the PC version support mods?

Yes. The Steam version includes Steam Workshop support, and the official Workshop description specifically highlights the ability to modify monsters in-game. Mods are optional and are not required for the base campaigns, Endless Mode, or Ascension Mode.

Is the game controller-friendly on PC?

Yes. Steam and Epic list controller support, and the Steam configuration identifies full controller support. A mouse and keyboard remain useful for comparing statistics and managing menus, but the core battles and dungeon decisions can be played with a gamepad.
