Game Description
Sands of Salzaar on PC is a top-down strategy action RPG set in a desert after the fall of the Old Empire. Developed by Han-Squirrel Studio and published by XD, it combines real-time hack-and-slash combat with faction warfare, recruiting, trade, diplomacy, exploration, and character progression. The current Steam listing still uses the name Sands of Salzaar; no verified storefront rebrand replaces it.
This is not a conventional linear RPG. Your character can become a wandering fighter, merchant, faction leader, dungeon explorer, or commander building an army across a changing desert world.
A top-down RPG built around army command
The main gameplay loop alternates between traveling across the map, accepting quests, recruiting units, upgrading heroes, managing supplies, and deciding which factions to support or oppose. Battles then bring the action closer, using a top-down perspective for direct character control while your troops fight around you.
Combat is real-time and ability-driven rather than turn-based. Characters attack with weapons, spells, and active skills, while different heroes follow their own specialized skill trees. The player can move through groups of enemies, trigger abilities, and help determine the result of encounters instead of watching an entirely automated battle.
Army management is just as important as personal damage. Recruits can be trained, upgraded, and organized into a larger force, but maintaining that force requires money, resources, and sensible decisions about where to travel next.
Players familiar with the open-ended warband structure of sandbox RPGs such as the Mount & Blade collection will recognize the appeal of building influence from a weak starting position, although Sands of Salzaar replaces first-person weapon handling with faster top-down action combat.
Story Mode, Sandbox Mode, and a living desert
Story Mode provides the most structured entry point, with authored quests, character arcs, faction conflicts, and a central narrative connected to the threats developing across Salzaar. It gives new players context for the setting and a clearer route through the game's systems.
Sandbox Mode shifts the emphasis toward emergent play. Factions compete, towns change hands, characters pursue their own interests, and the player can focus on conquest, commerce, alliances, exploration, or personal progression without following the same story path.
The difference matters because the game is designed around a world that keeps moving. A faction may become a useful ally in one playthrough and a dangerous rival in another, while quests and relationships can redirect your plans unexpectedly.
There is also an Expert Mode option associated with stricter saving rules and higher commitment. It suits players who want decisions to carry more weight, but the standard modes are better for learning the game's layered economy, faction, and army systems.
Heroes, relationships, and character builds
The base game offers 10 heroes, each built around a distinct skill tree and combat identity. Choosing a hero is not only a cosmetic decision: it affects how you approach battles, which abilities you can develop, and what kind of army or party complements your character.
Progression extends beyond the main protagonist. Recruitable NPCs can join your cause, provide new combat roles, and open additional interactions. The game also includes hero relationships and character conversations, giving companions more identity than ordinary disposable units.
The Champion of Chaos content adds substantial free changes to the wider progression model, including reworked skills, new NPC talent trees, and a Master Learn interaction that lets players acquire signature abilities from befriended characters.
Loot and equipment are tied closely to exploration. Dungeons contain bosses and rewards, while rare gear and skill combinations can push a build toward melee damage, ranged attacks, spellcasting, support, or a more specialized hybrid.
Factions, diplomacy, trade, and conquest
Salzaar is structured around rival tribes, cities, leaders, and political interests rather than isolated combat arenas. You can declare war, negotiate peace, cooperate with competing factions, or use the market to build wealth before committing to open conquest.
Trade is a meaningful alternative to constant fighting. Markets, resources, caravans, and regional demands create reasons to travel even when you are not pursuing a major quest or attacking a settlement.
Faction warfare gives the sandbox its long-term direction. Capturing cities and lands can increase your influence, but expansion also creates new enemies and increases the pressure on your army, finances, and diplomatic relationships.
The game does not provide the same level of battlefield command precision as a dedicated real-time strategy title. Its strength is the combination of personal action combat, party development, and campaign-level decisions rather than detailed formation simulation.
What the current PC content includes
The paid base game is supported by three gameplay expansions listed on Steam: The Tournament, The Ember Saga, and Land of the Eclipse. The commercial model is therefore a premium single-player game with optional paid content rather than a free-to-play service.
The Tournament adds a separate 3v3 arena format, elimination matches, spectator features, new recruitable NPCs, equipment, items, and additional build possibilities. This is the main multiplayer-oriented addition, while the core campaign remains presented as a single-player experience.
The Ember Saga expands the game with the Ember Workshop, jewel salvage, jewel refinement, jewel fusion, a child-rearing system, heir development, and the Among Legends: Xin Qi Ji character content.
Land of the Eclipse focuses on boss-hunting and customization. Its Eclipse Hive content adds secret-realm bosses and legendary equipment, while Exotic Wayfarer adds character customization options. Siege and Conquest expands settlement assaults with defensive walls and new siege behavior.
The free Champion of Chaos DLC is separate from those paid expansions. The soundtrack is also listed as additional content, but it is not a gameplay expansion.
Steam Workshop and PC-specific considerations
The PC version includes Steam Workshop support, Steam Cloud, achievements, and Family Sharing. Workshop content covers mods, scenarios, maps, characters, skills, rules, battle units, and other user-created additions, making the ecosystem considerably broader than the shipped campaign alone.
Sands of Salzaar also includes a built-in visual mod editor designed to let players expand or alter parts of the world without writing traditional code. That makes the PC edition particularly attractive to players who enjoy experimenting with custom rules and scenarios.
The Steam listing identifies English and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle support. Simplified Chinese also has full audio, while English is listed with text rather than full voice acting.
A keyboard control mode is available for combat. Full controller support is not prominently advertised on the current storefront page, so keyboard and mouse should be treated as the safest default for managing menus, troops, skills, and inventory.
Who should play Sands of Salzaar?
Sands of Salzaar is a strong fit for players who want a single-player sandbox where combat, politics, recruiting, exploration, and commerce overlap. It is especially suited to people who enjoy starting with limited power and gradually turning one character, one party, or one faction into a major force.
It is less suitable for players who want a tightly scripted fantasy story, highly polished tactical army controls, or a fully voiced cinematic presentation. The game expects experimentation and patience, and several systems are easier to understand after a few trial runs.
Players seeking an even more simulation-heavy open world may also enjoy open-ended survival RPGs like Kenshi, though Kenshi emphasizes automated squad combat, survival pressure, and settlement development rather than Sands of Salzaar's direct action battles and faction campaign.
For a more deliberate alternative built around mercenary management and tactical encounters, sandbox tactical RPGs such as Wartales offer a useful contrast. Wartales is turn-based and party-focused, while Sands of Salzaar is faster, more action-oriented, and more concerned with territory and faction power.
