Game Description
Battle Brothers PC is a turn-based tactical RPG and mercenary-company sandbox from Overhype Studios. Current Steam and GOG listings still use the original Battle Brothers name; there is no verified PC rebrand or replacement edition. You recruit desperate fighters, accept contracts, manage supplies, and try to keep a company alive in a procedurally generated low-fantasy world.
Build a Company One Contract at a Time
The campaign begins with a small group of poorly equipped sellswords and a map full of uncertainty. You decide where to travel, which settlements to visit, who to recruit, and whether a contract is worth the risk. Jobs range from hunting brigands to confronting undead, beasts, raiders, and larger faction conflicts.
Travel happens in real time across an isometric open world, but combat switches to a turn-based battlefield. Settlements provide markets, taverns, recruits, rumors, and contracts, while wilderness locations hide camps, ruins, loot, and dangerous encounters. Money is always under pressure because wages, food, medical supplies, tools, and equipment repairs compete for the same limited crowns.
There is no fixed party of heroic protagonists. Instead, the company develops through losses, lucky recruits, injuries, and unexpected events. A cheap farmhand can become a reliable frontline fighter, while an expensive noble may justify his salary through better resolve and combat potential.
Combat Where Position and Fatigue Matter
Battle Brothers uses hex-based tactical combat with action points, initiative, terrain, elevation, obstacles, zones of control, morale, and fatigue. Moving into the wrong position can expose a brother to several attacks, while a disciplined formation can deny an enemy the same opportunity.
Equipment is not cosmetic. Weapons have distinct attack patterns and tactical purposes, so your loadout should reflect both the recruit and the opponent. Spears help control space, maces are useful against armor, axes can punish heavily protected targets, and daggers can be used to preserve valuable armor for later looting.
Fatigue management gives every action a cost. Heavy armor and powerful attacks can exhaust a brother before the fight is decided, reducing the skills and movement available on later turns. A lightly equipped fighter with a dagger, net, or shield may sometimes contribute more effectively than a tired warrior carrying the largest weapon available.
Morale checks can turn a winning formation into a retreat, and injuries may be temporary or permanently damaging. Broken limbs, impaired lungs, and other wounds change how a brother performs after battle. Because individual characters can die permanently, retreating from a bad fight is often a strategic decision rather than a failure.
Flexible Builds Instead of Fixed Classes
Each recruit is generated with a background, attributes, traits, equipment, and potential weaknesses. Backgrounds such as brawlers, farmhands, monks, thieves, cultists, grave robbers, and nobles influence starting capabilities and can trigger different events during the campaign.
The game does not lock soldiers into a narrow class system. A brother’s development is shaped by his attributes, perks, equipment, and battlefield role. The perk tree lets you develop specialists for shield work, polearms, ranged attacks, heavy armor, mobility, morale support, or other tactical functions.
Traits and party events create stories that are specific to your company. A monk may help prevent conflicts between ambitious fighters, a cultist can become involved in religious events, and a reckless recruit may survive long enough to become one of the company’s most valuable veterans. These systems are more important to the game’s identity than a conventional scripted narrative.
Late-Game Crises and Replayable Campaigns
The world is procedurally generated, and each campaign changes the geography, settlement network, contracts, recruits, enemy groups, and opportunities available to you. You can pursue contracts, trade between towns, explore ruins, raid hostile camps, or search for powerful named equipment.
As a company gains renown, the campaign can escalate into a major late-game crisis. Noble houses may wage war, undead forces can threaten the realm, greenskin armies can invade, and the southern content introduces its own political and military pressures. These crises alter priorities rather than simply providing another list of missions.
Ironman mode removes manual save control and makes every campaign decision permanent apart from the game’s automatic save behavior. Players who prefer to learn through experimentation can use the regular save system, while experienced commanders may choose Ironman for a stronger sense of consequence.
What the PC Content Includes
The base game provides the core mercenary sandbox, tactical battles, recruit progression, contracts, exploration, random events, and end-game crises. The PC version is not a live-service product and does not use a free-to-play structure.
The main paid expansions are Beasts & Exploration, Warriors of the North, and Blazing Deserts. They expand the world with new opponents, regions, origins, contracts, equipment, events, locations, and campaign possibilities. Blazing Deserts also adds southern city-states, desert and jungle environments, arena combat, and a distinct late-game crisis.
Several smaller additions are free on the PC storefronts, including Of Flesh and Faith and the Lindwurm content. Of Flesh and Faith adds the Oathtakers and Anatomists origins, new equipment, banners, and additional events. The complete PC bundle combines the base game with the three major paid expansions, while the free content remains separate additions to the overall package.
PC Platform Details and Limitations
Steam lists Battle Brothers as single-player with Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and Remote Play on Tablet. The Steam edition uses the Steam client, while the GOG edition is listed as DRM-free and does not require GOG Galaxy to play.
English is the verified PC localization on the current storefront listings, covering the interface and text. Full voice acting is not listed. This matters because Battle Brothers communicates much of its world through written events, contract descriptions, rumors, character backgrounds, and party interactions.
The PC release does not advertise native controller support as a storefront feature, so mouse and keyboard should be treated as the intended input method. Steam Input or community control mappings may provide workarounds, but they are not the same as an official gamepad interface.
Modding exists through community-created tools and file-based modifications, but the developer has stated that the game does not have the full official mod support planned for a future sequel. Players should therefore treat mods as an unofficial ecosystem and expect compatibility issues when the game is updated.
Who Should Play Battle Brothers?
Battle Brothers suits PC players who enjoy permadeath, tactical positioning, procedural campaigns, resource pressure, and stories that emerge from systems instead of cutscenes. It is especially strong for players who like evaluating imperfect recruits, adapting formations, and accepting that a successful campaign may include painful losses.
The game is a poor fit if you want a guided heroic story, generous recovery systems, instant character respecs, or consistently fair-looking outcomes. Its difficulty comes from understanding threats, managing risk, and knowing when not to fight. Players who enjoy punishing party management may also appreciate stress-heavy turn-based dungeon crawls like Darkest Dungeon, although Battle Brothers replaces dungeon expeditions with a broader mercenary sandbox.
Similar Tactical Games on PC
Battle Brothers shares its squad customization, permanent soldier loss, and tactical decision-making with turn-based resistance campaigns such as XCOM 2. The difference is structural: XCOM 2 centers on a directed strategic campaign and mission objectives, while Battle Brothers focuses on contracts, travel, recruitment, equipment economics, and a more open-ended company story.
Its closest appeal is not simply medieval fantasy. The distinctive combination is mercenary management, granular equipment, morale, injuries, procedural recruits, and a campaign that can continue after individual veterans are lost. That makes it particularly valuable for players seeking a replayable tactical RPG rather than a traditional linear adventure.
Battle Brothers FAQ

Yes. Current Steam and GOG storefront listings use Battle Brothers. There is no verified PC rebrand or separate definitive name replacing the original title.
Is Battle Brothers multiplayer or co-op?
No. The PC storefront listing identifies Battle Brothers as a single-player game. It does not provide online co-op, competitive multiplayer, or split-screen play.
Which DLC is included in the complete PC package?
The main complete bundle combines the base game with Beasts & Exploration, Warriors of the North, and Blazing Deserts. Of Flesh and Faith and Lindwurm are free content additions rather than paid expansions.
Does Battle Brothers have Ironman mode?
Yes. Ironman mode disables manual save control, making the campaign’s battles, injuries, deaths, and strategic decisions carry greater permanent consequences.
Does the PC version support controllers?
Native controller support is not advertised in the current Steam feature list. Keyboard and mouse are the reliable PC input option, while Steam Input mappings may offer an unofficial alternative.
Does Battle Brothers support mods?
Community mods are available, but the developer has described the game’s modding support as limited rather than fully official. Mod users should expect to manage compatibility manually, particularly after game updates.
