Darkest Dungeon on PC, PS4, etc. is a turn-based RPG maintained in the atmosphere of dark fantasy. Production was developed by Canadian studio Red Hook.

Story

Darkest Dungeon takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by gothic novels and H.P. Lovecraft's works. The campaign takes place mainly in the ruins of an old mansion and a huge dungeon system underneath. This place was taken over by forces of darkness as a result of recklessness of the last lord of these lands. During the adventures we discover the past of his entire family and the truth about the filth that its members have brought to this world.

Mechanics

In Darkest Dungeon players deal mainly with exploring the underworld full of monsters and traps. These expeditions, however, have been implemented in a manner different from the standards of the RPG genre. The emotional state of the characters, not just their equipment, plays an important role. The heart of the game is a system that simulates the characters' psyche. Team members are not unbreakable heroes and terrifying experiences do not remain without influence on their emotional state, so during the game they are forced to deal with stress and phobias. As a result, after several expeditions each subordinate has his own reactions and inclinations. Achieving success requires constant monitoring of the team's mental condition, because if we don't take care of it, its members can panic, become paranoid, depraved and even go insane. The character's mental state also affects behavior during adventures and interactions with companions in arms.

The combat in Darkest Dungeon on the PC platform, PS4, etc. is played in a turn-based system. Proper selection of formations plays a key role, and every move must be well thought out, as deaths are final. The authors have combined old-school tactical depth with a number of more modern solutions, such as the counter-attack output mechanism. Monsters are not the only threat and traps, team feuds and darkness can be equally dangerous. Torches carried by the player gradually dim, increasing the fear of the characters.

In keeping the heroes in good mental condition help visits to the nearby town, where characters get the opportunity to discharge their emotions by drinking alcohol or praying. Gained wealth we invest in restoring the town to its former glory, which in turn opens up new opportunities, e.g. in acquiring new heroes. The game also offers an extensive camping system with numerous options, affecting the condition of the character during the rest.
