You command a small crew of troublemaking cats, send them into hostile places, and try to bring them back home with their tails still attached. What you do in Mewgenics

You build a roster of cats, train them, and form an expedition team. Early on, you field a squad of four. Then you head out to explore dangerous areas, fight enemies in turn-based encounters, and take on stronger boss foes along the way. Between trips, you return to your home base where the rest of the feline family lives. That home loop matters. It is where your next run gets set up, for better or worse.

A tactics game where the map fights back

Each turn, a cat performs one action. You can move or attack, and every choice has weight. You are not just counting damage. You are also watching positioning, cover, and the environment. Hide in tall grass to boost your chances of avoiding hits? Sounds smart. Until someone with fire-flavored nature magic turns that grass into a problem - for the cover and for the cat standing in it.

Weather can also change how the battlefield behaves. On snowy days, grass can turn into ice shards that become a hazard. But of course you can try to use that same danger as a barrier against incoming enemies. It is a nice little reminder that you are not only playing your cats - you are playing the board.

Classes, abilities, and leveling choices

Your starting team features cats from different classes, and those classes shape how you approach every fight. Some cats are better in close quarters, others lean into ranged pressure, and supportive roles exist too. The game includes more than 10 classes, and each class has 75 unique abilities. After a victorious battle, you can level up one cat and pick a new ability. It is a simple moment on paper, but it can define the rest of your run. Do you patch a weakness, or double down on the thing that is already working?

Getting hurt is not the end - until it is

When a cat loses all its health, it is not instantly gone forever. Instead, it becomes inactive for the rest of the battle, and it can survive the next day if it does not get hit three more times in that same fight. Push your luck, and you might save a run. Misjudge the situation, and you can turn a bad turn into a permanent loss.

Even a “survived” fatal moment has consequences. Taking that kind of hit can strongly weaken skill levels, so you feel the damage beyond the current encounter. It is the sort of system that makes you play a bit more carefully, even when the fight looks “mostly under control.”

Loot, rarity, and the pain of losing gear

During expeditions you collect equipment - over 900 unique items exist. You will find normal and rare pieces that modify stats and abilities. Some items can appear multiple times, but there are also extremely rare objects that can show up only once across a playthrough that can stretch for hundreds of hours. These are powerful and can swing battles hard.

There is a catch, and it is brutal in a very roguelike way: if the cat holding a legendary item dies, the item is lost with it. So yes, you can gear up your best fighter. But you are also putting your best toys in the same basket. Do you play safe, or do you send your favorite cat in anyway because you want that boss dead now?

Breeding, family traits, and the home base loop

After a successful trip, surviving cats return home with loot. That gear can be used to equip the next cats you send out. At home, your cats rest - and they can also expand the family line. You can place two cats in the same room and, if things go your way, you get a new cat that carries characteristic traits of both parents. In certain cases, the newcomer can also inherit abilities and mutations. To keep the population growing, you also care about upgrading the home itself.

There is another long-term pressure: cats age. Over time they get too old to keep going on adventures. They stay at home, where you may still use them for reproduction, until that is no longer possible and they eventually die of old age. It is oddly grounding. Your roster is not static. It is a family you manage, with time always moving forward.
