SOMA is a first-person survival horror game developed by Frictional Games (known for such hits as Amnesia: Dark Madness and the Penumbra series) for PC, PS4 and XONE. The action of the production takes place in the underwater, heavy sci-fi inspired PATHOS-II center and abounds in confrontations with monsters and artificial intelligence evoking a sense of fear and isolation. The game also explores the importance of human consciousness and the survival of civilization in the face of catastrophe, reminiscent of The Talos Principle.

SOMA tells the story of Simon Jarrett who, due to a series of events, ends up in the PATHOS-II research facility built on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It soon turns out that the complex has been taken over by an artificial intelligence that has killed all of its employees, and Jarrett has to get out of there by uncovering the facility's hidden secrets. The story's Hollywood twists and turns are replaced by a dense, unpleasant and suspenseful atmosphere that is a trademark of the filmmakers, while the narrative is interactive and relies on the protagonist's ability to communicate with the robots he encounters. In addition, the story is deepened by philosophical and religious themes, which refer, among others, to the story of the biblical flood, issues related to the limits of human morality or one's own identity.

In the game we observe the events from a first-person perspective, and the gameplay itself is divided into exploration, logic and survival sequences. During the former, we travel through the different sectors of PATHOS (marked with consecutive letters of the Greek alphabet) and the sections of the ocean floor that connect them, we can search drawers, cabinets or desks, as well as listen to recordings scattered around the game world and read e-mails that allow us to gain information vital to understanding the plot.

The logical elements are primarily associated with solving simple puzzles in the form of various mini-games and searching through various rooms in order to acquire items and upgrades that allow you to gain access to subsequent levels.

The survival aspect has been developed the strongest, offering close encounters with various monsters usually hiding in the tightest rooms of the center. We can only run away from the danger or hide in corners, using the dispersal of individual opponents to our advantage. Getting caught by the monster doesn't mean immediate death, because we can regenerate Jarrett's health using quite grotesque, interactive "first aid kits". SOMA on PC, PS4 and XONE also offers densely spaced checkpoints, so we don't have to worry about accidentally losing progress.

SOMA on PC, PS4 and XONE uses a proprietary HPL Engine 3 that generates highly detailed locations rich in physical elements and rereads each stage in real time, eliminating loading screens. When designing the levels, Frictional Games did their best to create the right atmosphere and the feeling of being trapped, placing the player not only in cramped, rusted and overgrown with disturbing organic substances rooms, but also in abandoned tunnels, claustrophobic ventilation shafts or long corridors filled with dead ends. The visuals are characterized by sparse lighting, a skillful play on faded colors, and frequent use of depth of field, which is especially noticeable when traversing the vast, overwhelming underwater areas.

Great attention was also paid to the audio layer, which is filled with subtle ambient sounds combined with piano interludes and interspersed with the terrifying roars of the creatures roaming PATHOS.
