Two modes: strategic campaign and real-time battles. In campaign mode, you manage provinces, recruit units, and research tech. Then you fight. Real-time battles on square-grid maps. Infantry, cavalry, artillery, samurai. You command them all. Trust me on this - the AI can be brutal. One wrong move and your general dies. I've restarted campaigns more times than I count.
