Game Description
Gauntlet Slayer Edition is a top-down fantasy dungeon brawler for PC, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by WB Games. It originally appeared simply as Gauntlet before the expanded update adopted the Gauntlet: Slayer Edition branding. The current Steam storefront uses the Slayer Edition name, while the core experience remains a fast, arcade-focused co-op adventure built around four heroes, treasure runs, monster hordes, and competitive party chaos.
Arcade dungeon crawling with distinct heroes
The central loop is direct: choose a hero, enter a dungeon, defeat waves of enemies, collect gold, find food and relics, survive traps, and reach the exit. Combat takes place from an isometric top-down perspective, giving the party a clear view of incoming enemies while preserving the crowded pressure that defines Gauntlet.
The four main characters are the Warrior, Valkyrie, Elf, and Wizard. They are not cosmetic variations. The Warrior is built for close-range attacks, the Valkyrie combines melee pressure with defensive tools, the Elf relies on ranged attacks and bombs, and the Wizard changes his offensive identity through different schools of magic. Positioning, attack range, and ability timing matter more than traditional inventory micromanagement.
Every run mixes straightforward combat with environmental threats. Spike traps, explosive hazards, locked areas, enemy ambushes, and bosses interrupt the basic march through the dungeon. Food restores health, but players can also compete over resources, kills, and gold, creating a light layer of rivalry inside an otherwise cooperative game.
Slayer Edition systems and modes
The Slayer Edition update gives the original formula more variety through hero weapon abilities, character loadouts, and a revised relic system. Each hero can equip different weapons that change the character's special ability. The Wizard can alter his magic school, the Elf gains alternate bomb options, and the Necromancer changes the type of creatures she summons.
Relics provide powerful temporary effects, but they are not automatic upgrades. Their value depends on timing and teamwork, and some relics can create dangerous situations when used carelessly around allies. Potion abilities add another high-impact tool, letting each hero contribute a distinct burst of power during crowded encounters or boss fights.
The campaign uses a campaign map rather than forcing players through a single linear chain of stages. Alongside the campaign, the game includes Endless mode, where procedurally generated floors test how long the party can continue, and Colosseum challenges built around surviving enemy waves in a confined arena. These modes give the game a score-attack and mastery loop instead of pretending to be a long-form role-playing campaign.
Difficulty is shaped by enemy density, traps, resource management, and the way the party handles revives and special abilities. A skilled group can move quickly through familiar objectives, while an inexperienced team can collapse when players split up, waste relics, or compete too aggressively for gold.
Content, editions, and paid additions
The base game includes the four primary heroes, the campaign, Endless mode, Colosseum content, local co-op, online co-op, and the progression systems tied to gold, relics, weapons, and abilities. It is a paid game rather than a free-to-play service, and its content model is relatively compact compared with modern live-service dungeon crawlers.
The storefront lists one main character add-on: the Lilith the Necromancer Pack. This DLC adds the Necromancer as a playable hero with her own combat identity, summon-based abilities, weapons, and potion options. Buyers should check whether a bundle includes the pack, because the standard product and the add-on are listed separately on Steam.
There is no large class roster or endless gear treadmill here. Progression is mainly about unlocking and choosing alternate abilities, learning enemy patterns, improving execution, and replaying procedural floors or challenge arenas with different party compositions.
Who Gauntlet Slayer Edition suits
This is a strong fit for players who want four-player same-screen co-op, short arcade-style dungeon runs, and immediately readable character roles. It works particularly well when everyone has a controller and the group enjoys communicating under pressure without committing to a sprawling role-playing campaign.
The game also suits fans of competitive co-op systems. Friends can cooperate against the dungeon while still comparing gold totals, kill counts, and who caused the latest disaster. That tension is part of the design, but groups looking for a purely supportive party experience may find the rivalry distracting.
Players who expect deep character statistics, elaborate quest writing, extensive build crafting, or a persistent online endgame should set their expectations lower. Gauntlet is closer to a modernized arcade dungeon crawl than a loot-heavy action RPG. Its strongest appeal is repeatable combat with friends, not a huge narrative or long-term character spreadsheet.
PC features and multiplayer reality
On PC, Gauntlet Slayer Edition supports single-player, shared-screen local co-op, and online co-op for up to four players. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which allows a host to invite friends into the local-style experience without requiring every participant to own a separate copy through the same setup.
Steam integration includes achievements, cloud support, leaderboards, trading cards, and platform overlays. The game requires the Steam client when played through Steam and includes a third-party EULA. The GOG edition is sold as DRM-free for offline play, but GOG states that online multiplayer requires GOG Galaxy and is restricted to GOG users.
Controller support is central to the couch-co-op design, and the interface is at its best when every player has a clear input device. The PC version also supports eight interface and subtitle languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Italian. Full audio is listed for every supported language except Italian, which has interface and subtitle support.
Similar co-op dungeon games on PC
Players who want a more loot-driven version of accessible top-down co-op can compare it with co-op action RPG dungeon crawling like Minecraft Dungeons, which puts greater emphasis on equipment drops and build combinations.
Those who enjoy character classes but want to combine direct combat with defensive planning may prefer class-based co-op action and tower defense in Dungeon Defenders. Its heroes fight directly while also managing defenses against incoming waves.
For a more traditional party action RPG with a stronger story framework, three-player fantasy co-op such as The Lord of the Rings: War in the North offers character progression and narrative missions rather than Gauntlet's arcade-first structure.
Gauntlet Slayer Edition FAQ
Is Gauntlet Slayer Edition the current name of Gauntlet on Steam?
Yes. The game first appeared under the shorter Gauntlet name and was later updated and rebranded as Gauntlet: Slayer Edition. The current Steam product title is Gauntlet Slayer Edition.
Does Gauntlet Slayer Edition support four-player co-op?
Yes. It supports up to four players in both same-screen local co-op and online co-op. Steam also lists Remote Play Together for inviting friends into the shared-screen style of play.
Can Gauntlet Slayer Edition be played solo?
Yes. A single player can complete the campaign and enter the other modes alone, but the design is clearly centered on party play. Hero roles, shared resources, revives, and friendly competition have more impact with multiple players.
What is included in the Necromancer DLC?
The Lilith the Necromancer Pack adds a playable Necromancer with summon-focused attacks, alternate weapons, unique abilities, and her own potion options. The pack is listed separately from the base game on Steam.
Does the GOG version require GOG Galaxy?
GOG states that Galaxy is optional for installing and playing the game offline. However, GOG Galaxy is required for online multiplayer on that storefront, and online play is limited to GOG users.
Is Gauntlet Slayer Edition a deep action RPG?
It has role-playing elements, hero customization, relics, weapons, and unlockable abilities, but its main identity is an arcade-style co-op dungeon brawler. The long-term loop is based on mastering heroes, replaying campaign stages, surviving procedural Endless floors, and improving party coordination.
